Can anyone out there give me some suggestions on how to improve SL's performance when using a dial-up connection? I would really appreciate it. Thanx

You can tweak your settings some, but you will never be able to play without broadband. Broadband is a minimum requirement and SL is really demanding and dialup really doesnt work at all. I dont know specifically what you need to do, but you need to dumb down all your settings as far down as they will go. Its really not worth the effort without Braodband, hope you can get set up with a good connection and try again later.

Really, the most you can hope for is to connect and be able to chat with people in the area. Moving around is almost certainly out of the question, as is loading scenery.

Well, I've played over a broadband connection runing at about ~56kbps, with a 1000msec latency, and it runs fine. Just stay away from shopping malls, and try to stick to islands, and dont move around too much.
That said, whilst your dial-up connection is theoretically 56k, many dialup connections run far below that, and I'm not even sure that 56k doesnt include the control and header overhead associated with the link, which will blast your speed down even more.

1) Set draw distance as far down as possible 2) Since draw distance is so low, turn on all the eye candy. Your computer can handle it. 3) Disable sound 4) Don't move around any faster than a walk, and don't move around if you don't need to 5) Teleport as little as possible, and be ready to wait 10-30 minutes after a teleport for the world to rez. 6) Log in and out as little as possible. See above. 7) Hang out in low-content sims. The forest of Rodeo is probably good, as are the vehicle sims. Set the disk cache as high as possible. 9) Get broadband. Dialup SL isn't good for more than as a bridge while you're waiting for your broadband connection to be set up.
