I've had a bit of a Christmas for getting computer upgrades - first the hubby gets a new nVidia card and RAM for my cronky old motherboard, then my parents present me with a brand new top of the range 'puter. Woot!

Nice huh? Well, yes.... if they would run SL.

[Heck, if only all my problems were such high class ones! Still, 'tis frustrating]

Actually, I got "old cronky" working just fine with the new cards now, but I'm have REAL trouble with "shiny new".

For those still reading, the specs are...

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6420 @ 2.13GHz
2046MB RAM
Windows Vista(32bit)
ASUS X1550 Series ATI card

We have tried every driver that has ever been released for the card. We have un-installed and re-installed SL/graphics drivers in every permutation possible, we have even removed the card and totally reinstalled it.

SL did work, for one session, following physically removing and reinstalling the GC, but has since been crashing on starting up SL (before the login screen).

I've searched the forums for help and whilst there are many posts like /327/a3/232265/1.html saying SL, ATI and Vista don't mix, I can't find any saying WHY or how to FIX the problem.

For some reason my techie husband is refusing to spend a further 7 hours trying to make this work.... Any advice?

You may not like this, but new PCs rarely work out of the box. Well, they do, but might not so well for games that try to get everything out of your PC.
New PCs almost never come with the latest mainboard, sound and videocard drivers, as well as mainboard BIOS. You already tried upgrading the videocard driver, but did you do the same for the other two?
The easiest way would be to see which mainboard your PC uses and then to go to the mainboard manufacturer's website, getting the latest drivers from there. You'd be surprised how many PCs would work well if their owners would think of upgrading those other drivers as well. and no, unfortunately windows update won't do. The same goes for the BIOS which you can get from there as well. You can find the latest one at the mainboard manufacturer's website
Some say you shouldn't update your mainboards BIOS unless you really have to and it's not as easy as upgrading drivers, but as last resort i'd give that a try too. The BIOS will most likely come with a manual on how to do that for your board. Good luck, happy new year and have fun with your new PC ^_^

Save yourself hours by installing windows xp instead.

Ati's opengl for vista, arent very good so it would be much much faster to get hold of a winxp and install it.
