Serendipitously, I ran across the following. Putting in a new nVidia card with custom nVidia drivers, a driver set which did not include nView Desktop Manager (which feature I never had used), Comcast Rhapsody and the Second Life client stopped having problems. I found that Comcast Rhapsody specifically mentioned that the problem I had been having with Rhapsody was due to nView Desktop Manager. I am guessing that nView Desktop Manager also caused problems with unloading the SL client from memory. The nView Desktop Manager of Forceware 93.71 seems to have caused Second Life clients to take an incredible amount of time to close, after quitting an SL session, taking up to 3 minutes to close memory.

It is possible to disable nView Desktop Manager, though I can't tell you how, since I no longer have it with my present nVidia drivers. If you are having problems similar to mine, you may wish to disable nView Desktop Manager and see whether that cures your problem.
