Worse and Worse

Can things get any better? seriously. *Wonders if the items she just purchased will still be delivered since her order was being processed.*

No offense cuz I've certainly done my share of whining but did this warrant its own topic? I mean really. If you read the blog they felt it was necessary to not dick around with long notifications because they felt the exploit was potentially serious. What is the difference between 10 seconds and 1 min. Maybe if you started writing a novel online and didn't save. Otherwise, the world will be the same when we all return. I have no problem with them taking the grid down so quickly. That just means it will come back up faster (hopefully).

Yes i agree, in every repsect they do have their job to do, and i can see now they are doing all this in respect of the players but the down times of the grid and updates are getting a bit crazy now. Hope you get to the bottom of the problem soon.

It didn't spring up out of nowhere and they just became aware of it. If permissions have been screwed for WEEKS, why is it too much time to give the residents 2 mins to SAVE thier work or accept thier deliveries? YES it needs to be fixed. NO it doesn't have to be at the expense of the residents when it would make NO difference if it was 2 MORE minutes added to the weeks the problem has existed already.

Quick Down
10-14-2006 07:58
Maybe its just me *shrugs* but its a large pattern. Give an update on Wednesday, the game goes up and down for the next few days, then starts the vicious cycle again. I don't believe there is enough beta testing. While we all love the updates and fixes, most of them can wait til its fully tested. Lately the game has been down more and more. Kinda disheartening. We pay for monthly use, or many pay the full year. But where is our refund for the time we can't play? Our payment is for the month of play, not spuratic playtime. Anything prorated? If the Lindens would be smart. BETA TEST with a live server. Get X amount of knowledgeable players to test it. There are many out there that would be willing to help. Being down costs them money, so I know its something that would benefit them also.
Test Test and then when you think you got it.. TEST AGAIN.

I missed the part where this has been like this for weeks I saw One night for a handful of hours after the grey goo attacks And now this incident. If you had a profitable store - and your SL income literally depended on permissions remaining intact youd be far more concerned. Me what id like is an exact breakdown of from what time to what time permissions get lost- and how. So I can go through my sales and know if i still have a buisness when the freebies come out.

Permissions bug
10-14-2006 09:58
I was told about the permissions bug last week when they turned off all scripts. Checked my vendors, when they came up again, and I did not seem to have caught it. This is one they need to NAIL, and nail it completely. I am a small time vendor, and it worried me tremendously. I can imagine what it would be like for someone like BareRose or Abotts Airdrome. Not good, not good at all.

I wouldn't expect to have a job on monday morning if I let code this fragile out the door.
There's no testing--and it's obvious. The so-called exploits are soooo large that the fixes require the entire code base to be shut down.
Anyone stop and think about how profoundly bad that really is?
I've never seen anything like this. Obviously down time this significant requires reimbursement. This isn't a few hours here and there.
This place is an unqualified disaster right now.
One more thing. Just what the hell is the definition of the word 'shortly' to Linden Labs?

a term that erks me is "shortly"
how long is shortly? if we are talking eons then a cupla 1000 years is shortly. be great to know a estimated time that the grid will be up
its like SL has got to big for LL and they just dont have enough skilled labour working there. like any business that grows fast, staffing it can always be difficult, especially if these people are called in out of bed! SL is a 24 hr a day business, maybe some more staff could help rectify problems
Maybe when u find the hacker(s) offer them a job to help defend SL against other attacks

[10:07 am PDT] Mac build finished. Linux build started. Smoke tests being prepared for Mac/PC builds. We are considering making Brent run all the way from his apartment to the office to start compiling…just because we want to see him run.
Talk about them having fun here pffffft Get it Done Lindens instead of playing around !

[10:55 am PDT] Brent sure is swift of foot. Final testing is underway and we should be able to post new viewers within the hour, ready to open (bar any unforseen issues) by noon.
ooh nearly an hour between updates. im glad brent is swift of foot. the humour kills me. but hey! look an estimated time!!!!!! woohoo

Well I am paying, for myself and another, full year, and not only that, I own an island. So more money paid out. Ip ban the idiots, let the people that want to play the game enjoy it. Don't get me wrong, they have a great product here. But look at the real business's and universities that come here.. They are down too. Easy way to lose them cause they will not remain with this up and down. I can't say it enough. BETA TEST, TEST and TEST again...................

SL is a 24 hr a day business, maybe some more staff could help rectify problems Maybe when u find the hacker(s) offer them a job to help defend SL against other attacks I do believe you've hit the nail on the head... Since it seems that LL's primary (dare I say ONLY) concern is to the VC's, and pumping up the numbers, residents-wise, to keep the VC's happy, they seem to be doing a bang-up job given THAT scenario.. But security-wise and scalability-wise, in my opinion, they are falling flat on their face.. Too many times, I've noticed bizarre little glitches when rezzing items from my inventory.. Items which had many linked prims the last time I rezzed them, only have one prim upon rezzing.. Then if I wait anywhere from 2-5 min, the additional prims finally rez.. These bizzare issues ONLY occur when the grid (and the asset server cluster) are heavily loaded (ie: 10K+ online at a time).. To me this is a scalability issue with the asset servers. In part of my RL day job, I admin a cluster of 50 Linux servers, used for math modeling.. The user base for the cluster's modeling services increased recently and we added an additional 10 servers to the then 40 server cluster... Piece of cake, it only cost us about 40K US (10 Dell PE850 1U servers at ~4K US apiece).. If LL really cared about the residents AND the people who are desparately trying to run a business in SL, they likely could do this just as easily, so long as they properly designed the asset cluster... I've been in SL since June '05, and when the only way to join SL was to pay $9.95/onetime or $9.95/mo for premium, we did not have these idiotic griefing problems... end of story!! However, this permissions issue is something else.. Apparently LL's programmers subscribe to the Microsoft school of programming... Anybody want to buy a very nice 4096 s/m waterfront parcel with protected Gov Linden waterways on two sides, in Vashti sim??? Gotta sell before 10/23... Tas

Obviously down time this significant requires reimbursement. This isn't a few hours here and there. This place is an unqualified disaster right now. One more thing. Just what the hell is the definition of the word 'shortly' to Linden Labs? Not to mention taking servers down in such an abrupt manner... LL's programmers obviously subscribe to the Microsoft school of computer security... As for LL's definition of "shortly".. It means whatever they want it to mean... Whoever is actually at fault, all of these outages are going to take a BIG toll on the people who are willing to pay-to-play in SL... Its been said before, but the cynic in me will say it again... In the not-too-distant future, LL will wake up one morning, and the million+ residents they then have, and are bragging about to the mass media and to their VC's, are gonna be freebie/basic accounts.. All the paying content creators/builders/designers are all gonna hit the road... In short, yep, I 've thought about how profoundly bad this is... While reading the SLinsider blog, I read an article about "SL Addiction"... I'm afraid I'm one of the poster children for that affliction... "Hi, I'm Tasman Perth, and I'm an SL addict!!".... That's why I WILL NOT just walk away from SL, but will downgrade to a basic account... However, the realist in me says that when the exodus from premium to basic accounts really gets going, they will likely take steps to prevent that.. Hmm... Gotta sell my land before 10/23.... Anybody wanna buy a lovely 4096 s/m waterfront parcel with protected waterways on two sides, in Vashti sim?? Tas
