Plethora of Technical Issues

I have been silenty and patiently waiting for issues to be fixed but things are not getting better, they're getting worse. It is time to debug this software and fix the impact of the new features. Here is a list of bugs I have found since we have switched to 1.7 and beyond:

1- Object Permissions in Edit Window
If you lock an object, and bring up the edit window, you will notice that the x,y and z coordinates, rotation ... in fact all of the settings that define the location of a prim are completely blank. In the earlier versions, these fields were grayed out which meant I could read the value put it in my calculator on my desktop, add the offset and be able to enter it into the object I am editing so that the two objects are perfectly flush etc.

Now I can hear people saying, unlock your damn object. Sounds great but what if I bought this object? I bought a castle build from a guy who is no longer in game, he is or was a famous builder, something Stern. The castle comes in three pieces that have to be stacked up perfectly on top of each other. Unfortunately when Stern made the castle he made one mistake, his root prims for each level of the castle do not match in terms of where they fall within the structure. Since the structure is circular, it is very hard to align them in the x,y coordinates without being able to access the values for the prims that align.

So when I take his build, and unlock it which I still can, I can access the edit settings of the root prim but I can not check "edit linked parts" and access the settings of a child prim. I don't want to change the settings of the child prim, I just need to see what they are. This used to be possible, now it is not.

2-Scripts and other items in Content tab missing from several objects
Several objects I have built and scripted and stored in my inventory no longer show me their scripts and contents when I rez them in SL. So I can not edit the scripts of these objects though obviously the scripts are working -- as in my particle emitter works when I rez it in my land but when I go to edit it., under contents nothing is displayed. I own it, I built it and it is unlocked on my scripting, building allowed land lot.

3-Objects jump around during editing on Windows XP (over Cable Modem Link or T1)
Since 1.8 update whenever I am dragging objects or setting coordinates by entering into the coordinate boxes, every third object jumps back to its original creation spot.

Example: I am building a wall composed of <1x10x10> pieces that are aligned perfectly. So I place the first piece at a nice and easy coordinate like <120,200,10> and then I duplicate it which places it at <120.500,200.500,10> (btw, have I mentioned how much I hate this offset thing? -- anyways), then I enter the new values <130,200,10> and duplicate again for the third piece at which time the second piece jumps back to <120.500,200.500,10>. I have had this happen over and over and over in the last two weeks in Uzume.

I finally resolved to accept it as a possible side effect of lag -- though I have never had it happen in the last two years of building even through the worst laggy times.

4-Land Parcel Settings for Scripting, Create Objects
These should not affect the owner of the land, they should affect everyone else. If I turn off Scripting, Teleporting, Flying, Creating Objects on my own land, then I can not do these things myself?

This is nuts. Tell me this is a bug.

5-Ban from Parcel makes zero sense when the banned person can BUY my land
When I ban someone from my land, they should be completely unable to buy my land. Currently I can ban someone but they can turn around and buy my land. What's wrong with this picture?

6-Root Prim, rotating objects, and other people's parcels
I have a parcel that is next to one of those famous tiny parcels with advertisements which is fine. I no longer get all worked up about ugly signs. I think it just makes the owners look like asses. Anyhow, I only take issue if the sign placed on the lot rotates in a way that sweeps into my land. And I figured because it rotates it is not caught by my auto-return setting.

Other Issues that are harder to resolve:
1-Vehicles are a mess, and I mean a mess. Between scripting turned on and off and fly on and off and sim boundaries etc. Traveling in any vehicle across the sims is just merely an impossibility.

Perhaps we need to set an altitute at which it all becomes public or Linden owned? Oh no, I am going to get shot by people who own castles in the sky. :-( I dunno people, I am thinking out loud here.

2-Textures
I too have noticed that both on my PowerBook G4 and my Windows XP textures are not loading fast enough, and they're not getting cached right so they keep loading and reloading and reloading if I were to fly in a circle in the same sim.

3-Particles
Where did they go? They're so puny these days and since I can not edit my particle scripts to compensate for the change (look above for the reason), my fountains are spurting odd drops of water every now and then instead of flowing gracefully like they did.

4-Flying as an avatar
is Buggier than ever and keeps lagging, and making me run into mountains, buildings etc.

Also when someone is flying at a certain speed, all buildings should act as Phantom. I keep getting trapped inside the thick walls of yet another shoe multiplex mall every time I want to go somewhere. In fact shoe malls are the SL equivalent of Pennsylvania, "they just get in the way when you want to go somewhere." -- quote from "The House of Yes".

The list goes on but I will not.

Dear Lindens, I plea that you stop adding new features. Please make the grid and the client applications more stable in terms of performance.

Thanks for listening and thanks for all your hard work,

Sincerely,

Troy Vogel

Troy, I completely agree with you that there are many outstanding issues that need to be addressed. For me personally, the Sim Time Dilation issues that were introduced with 1.7 seemed to have been somewhat fixed for a while, then began to return again. About every other day I need to have my sim restarted - and that doesn't even seem to be fixing it anymore.

Anyway - just wanted to point out with your #2 above - I don't think that's a bug - its actually working as designed. Let me explain:

Certain script functions, like Hovertext, Rotation, and *particles* - become an actual property of the prim when set. This means that once the 'switch is flipped' - it stays with the prim, even if the script that 'threw the switch' is removed. This behavior has been around since I've been in SL.

To kill particles, hovertext, or rotation in an object where a script has previously turned it on - removing the script is not sufficient. You have to add a script to the object to do the opposite affect - be it turning the particle system off, setting rotation to 0, or setting hovertext to be " ".

Hope this makes some sense :D

re: issue 1 - My understanding is this greying out was done to stop people from copying other peoples work by numbers.

This seems to be a response to people copying these parameters by hand into other objects, and getting around the permissions system that way. I can see then blanking the object parameters in that case, but you should at least be able to read the position, size, and rotation.

As for your castle... I really think there needs to be soem kind of "probate escrow" mechanism, whereby objects controlled by people who leave SL get inherited by their owners after the creator is gone for good, at least as far as modify rights are concerned. After some reasonable period they should revert all the way to the public domain, with the current owners getting full rights, the way copyrighted content in the real world works. The public domain is a valuable resource for EVERYONE including creators, and it's poorly served by SL's current rights system.

I've had this problem, it seems to be related to caching. I can usually get the scripts to show up again with "Recompile Scripts in Selection".

3-Objects jump around during editing
I get this too, it seems to be a real bug, and I haven't got a workaround.

Don't set your land for sale.

6-Root Prim, rotating objects, and other people's parcels
They're not actually rotating on the server, they just *look* like they're rotating on the client. Right-click them and they'll stop moving and show you where they really are.

It's like particles or trees. Particles don't exist on the server, so someone can shoot particles onto your land all day and you can't do anything about it.

The vehicle issues don't have anything to do with ownership or building... they have to do with handoff between sims. You know there's no building over 768 meters, right?
