This is a first! I have just tried to log in for the first time today and I am getting this message. Now what??

I got it too.
I called LL and they said it's a connection problem, so I plugged in ethernet instead of wireless...
Still getting it.
I talked to Michael, Some (really nice&&funny) guy, don't know his name, and Del.
Michael told me the first part, the other two basically explained to me that I should try to ping it if I had a windows, but I have a mac, so I found a way to ping it. Still not working, and I'm not sure what I was supposed to relay to them from the ping, but it continued past 140 pings o.o, then Del said to close it, and now I'm waiting 'till tomorrow ><

Keep an eye on the Second Life blog and the comments people leave there. That's the best way to get a read on the current state of SL when there are problems. But just so you know, they've been having serious database problems the last two days, and I've heard many reports of people getting kicked out of sims due to restarts all weekend.
