This Sucks

I am sooooo tired of the lag and packet loss. Its impossible to venture out of my sim. Everywhere I go, I cant walk, cant open my map or inventory without my FPS going below 1. I've tried numerous suggestions from these forums,,,nothing helps. Friends have offered suggestions, no help there either. What else can I do,,it never ends and it keeps getting worse. Everyone I know has similar problems, some are better than others and some are as bad as me. Before the introduction of voice and its componets, I was getting 20-40 FPS, now Im very lucky if I get 2-8. Even in my class 5 private sim, my FPS never go above 12. Its imposible to function here anymore. Trouble tickets and bug reports never get replies. I guess its time to downgrade my account to a basic one. I cant see a reason to pay for this crap anymore. Its getting worse by the day and LL does nothing to remedy this situatuion. I believe voice has ruined SL and its so bad now LL has no idea how to fix it. If anyone has any suggestions to help me with my lag and horrible FPS, i welcome them. But I do believe Ive tried just about everything. I thought last November and December were bad,,I wish we were back there now.. SL ran perfect compaired to now.

And what does this have to do with technical issues?

Sometimes it might just be the laptop or computer you are using or the internet connection you are running. What hardware and internet access do you have? Perhaps that will help.

and if its your local machine fps look for spyware, just becuase the sim is slow doesnt mean your fps drop

Looks like a request for suggestions to me.

We need more information to make helpful suggestions Cathy.
Please post your system specs / what you've tried etc. and hopefully more productive answers will be possible.

I do suspect that often it is not purely SL's fault. I have very often been hanging out with someone in some Sim that isn't terribly crowded, and I'll be having no problem, and they are all lagged to hell and can't do anything. Surely that must be a problem on the user's end, and not on SL's.

Like others said, Cathy, if you give some specifics on your system, maybe some techies can help you. I'm not very savvy about that stuff, but I assume you've done the basics like updated your praphics card drivers, and you don't have your draw distance set too high?

Sighs... ok in an attempt to answer all possible woes once and for all (and in no particular order):

Defrag the hard drive
Look for spyware and viruses
Uninstall any background processes you don't really need
Update your graphics drivers
Try 24bit or 16bit colour instead of 32bit
Reduce the screen resolution
Update your main board drivers
Check you have plenty of drive space spare
Change to Linux
Clean out the SL cache
Delete your SL preferences and let the client regenerate a new one set to defaults
Reduce the graphics settings in the client
Check your main memory for errors
Check your hard drive for bad sectors
Unplug, clean and re-plug your network / phone cables
Update your network card / adsl / modem drivers
Update your soundcard drivers
Unplug any non-essential usb devices
Try a hot cup of tea
Turn it off and on again
If you are running windows try repairing internet explorer to make sure it's all happy
Check how many antivirus programs you have running
Drink less coffee
Clean up your desk space (doesn't help but makes you feel better)
Re-install your OS

And so on...
Now when you've finished doing that lot. Come back and tell us how it went? Cool!

PS. I forgot to add : Check your ADSL filter is good enough quality

I have the same problem, but I'm 100% sure it's my rather ancient computer setup, of which I won't even post the specs here as everyone would probably die from laughing too much.

Anyway, I recently went to an 'office hour' discussion held by Prospero Linden, and it was very informative. He suggested to me to go into my preferences and click the 'advanced graphics' tab. I only have a 64K graphics card, and what was suggested was to lower the setting in preferences to ...say....32. This is what I did and it helped a lot. So depending on the graphics card, try lowering the setting in preferences.....
