I had a LiveHelp call this evening (morning for me), saying they were crashing in SL a lot.. So I asked their system specs as you do.. And they told me they had 2560 GIGS of RAM..
It struck me immediatly and I asked if maybe they meant 256mbs of ram (what I had until Christmas, how inferior am I?).. But they were insistant they had 2560 Gigs of RAM..
And I started to wonder, possible?

Megabytes sounds far more likely for that. I've never seen that amount of RAM on a desktop computer before.
Highest amount I've seen to date is 8 GigaBytes (Adam Zaius).

Must be MB, or they're talking about HDD. Actual units seem to be becoming more and more irrelevant to most people; I've got a mate who works at a broadband company who says everyone in the office is absolutely convinced they're supplying 8 megabytes a second.

Even using intel's EMT64 address extension. 1,000GB is as high as it goes. Even if you could cram that much memory into a box, there'd be the small problem of where to get the 5,000 watts to run it and where to bleed off that much heat.

About 10 jerryrigged 500watt true power powersupplies and a big plastic bin with the hardware submerged in vegitable oil. Yes I'm serious. Vegitable oil is non corossive, an eletrical insulator, and absorbs heat really well. I've seen some overclockers experiment with this type of cooling with much success.

Real overclockers use liquid helium.

Common end-user error.
99% of the non-techies I have ever dealt with refer to hard drive space as "memory", so I bet that is what they are talking about.

From: Zapoteth Zaius I can understand that, but they called it RAM.. It was very strange.. Technically HDDs are Random Access devices, so if just confused memory with storage he'd still be right. Of course it's obvious that he really only has 256MB of memory and the guy is just confuzzeled by all of the numbers and cryptic terms people use when talking about computers. It also explains why SL is in slideshow mode for him, he's probably swapping to the disk constantly.

No, HDDs ARE sequential access devices (Hmmm... SAD...). The disk has to physically spin and the heads move-- that's why you have "average" "seek" time. With RAM, any data can be accessed just as fast.

One of my code jokey friends used to annoy other develpers in her department by referring to buying a new hard drive as a memory upgrade. While strictly true, it;s not common usage. From: someone they told me they had 2560 GIGS of RAM.. Very interesting. A current 64-bit CPU could theoretically address that much RAM, but in practice I've not heard of a consumer motherboard with more than 64GB capacity. If we speculate that this person had ~2560 G RAM in say 4 modules, then the modules would bear ~640 GB apiece. If each module was double sided non-parity, with 8 chips per side, then each memory device would be ~40G. I would guess 32G modules won't hit the consumer market for perhaps 5 years conservative, 2 years aggressive. so we have a time traveller from at least 2008 coming back in time to play Second Life on a PC. And here I thought by 2008 I'd have a flying car and could jack into the 'net from a port on my cranium. I'm so disappointed.

2560 megs of ram is a "round" number, so it's also a possibility - 2 gigs is 2048 megs, plus 512 equals 2560.
