Ack - Used the wrong name to sign up!

I was having problems with the sign up form, it was saying that I couldn't create an additional account even though it was my first... To make matters worse, every time I tried to restart the sign up process, it said that the name I had used was unavailable. I eventually managed to get it to work, but it was using the wrong name, just one that I was using randomly to try to get it working! Is there any way to change my first name, or am I stuck with it? I tried searching the forums but apparently both 'first' and 'name' are too short to be searched...

I feel like such an idiot... Thanks for any help you can give!

I think you'll have to buy a second account.

Use the first as a bank.

Contact support. But yes, I think you are stuck with it. I would contact support to see if you can close the account and start a new one.

Definitely contact support. We had that happen, they deleted the mistake account for us and refunded the extra $10 :)

Well that's nice to know. They did no such thing for my wife when she signed up with the wrong name.

Thank you for all your replies! It seems that they won't change my account or refund the extra $10 unfortunately... Just out of curiosity, if I do buy a second account (I'm planning to but the name I used got stuck as 'reserved', even though I was the one who reserved it. It seems if you stop the sign up halfway it doesn't free up the name again, so I'm waiting on a registration reminder). Wow, long brackets... Um, if I do get a second account, what will I be able to use the first one for? Several people have said that an alt is handy, but I haven't seen why yet in the short time I've been exploring ^_^

By the way, Joy, did you have to do anything special to get a refund? I asked if it would be possible to delete the first account and sign up for a new one but they said I wouldn't be eligible for a free account even if they deleted my first one.

Thank you all for your help anyway! ^_^

Weird, there may have been something else that happened to cause this - it did happen a while ago and my memory is a bit fuzzy... :(

Alts are really useful when building or scripting, used either as a secondary view or for testing things that require permissions or multiple users.

Of course you can wander around without anyone knowing who you are too.

I signed up for a free account, found that the login name was also your character name, and wanted to change it. Luckily I have multiple credit cards so I just opened a second trial, than changed back to using primary credit card.

If it was my card and the lindens wouldn't fix it. I would contact the CC company and get my $10 back. It's not like you're trying to change the name after a month and It's not like the lindens are out anything other than the 5 minutes it would take to fix it

but the name that you ended up with is such a lovely one!
