Linden Labs "MOVIE" note card

Here is a notecard that was given to me, when I asked the same question:

TO MAKE A MOVIE

1. Change your screen resolution to as small as possible:
a. Right-click on your Windows Desktop.
b. Choose "Properties", then "Settings".
c. Choose 800 by 600 pixels.
d. Click "Apply", then "OK".

2. Log in to Second Life.

3. Activate the Debug menu. To do this, hit Ctrl-Alt-D. "Debug" should appear to the right of Help in the main menu.

4. Set your movie resolution. Select "Set 320x240 Windowed for Movies" from the File menu. IMPORTANT: your Second Life window will be reduced significantly. During filming, you must leave the Second Life window at this size on your screen.

5. Hide the UI. Click Ctrl-Alt-1 to hide the UI so that it won't appear in your movie.

6. Start your movie.
a. Click Ctrl-Shift-A to start the movie (this command also stops filming).

7. Pick a place to save your movie. IMPORTANT: select or create a folder NOT on your desktop (for example, any folder on your C drive will work).
a. Once you have your folder selected, click "Open."
b. Click "Save".

8. Choose video compression. Next the video compression menu will appear, giving you a choice of codecs (compressor/decompressor).
a. Select "Full Frames/Uncompressed". IMPORTANT: this will generate a large uncompressed video file - about 1 Gb per minute - that you will need to compress during or after editing.
OR
b. Select "Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec". IMPORTANT: you will first need to install the Windows Media 8.0 and 9.0 codecs (if you don't already have them). You can find these at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/wi...cdownload.aspx.
c. Click "OK," and filming begins.

9. Capture your raw footage. To stop filming, Click "Ctrl-Shift-A".

10. Edit your movie using your choice of video editing application.

Hope that helps :)

The built-in movie recorder is not very good (or wasn't the last time I used it.) It doesn't record any sound. It also doesn't adjust the framerate in the output file. So, if your computer is running a little slow, the result will look like a sped-up silent film. If it's fast, things will look slo-mo.

What you really want is Fraps.

Fraps Rocks! I found it from one of Huns' earlier posts - and use it all the time now :)

So, i downloaded Fraps yesterday, and I have to say that it does work well. I'm now going to suck it into AVID and see what I can create. :)

Thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks for the heads up, Huns. Fraps looks like a nice little program.
