When attempting to access Second Life using the Linkxsys WRT54GX2, using comcast cable, a linksys cable modem and the router, Second Life lags and crashes. When I take the router out of the mix, and plug the cable modem into the ethernet port on my PC, Second Life works perfectly. PC's specs are fine; everythign that can be updated is, the problem is isolated to the router. The router mac address is registered with the ISP, which they can read back to me. Any ideas? It's driving me crazy.

Is your router secured?log in to your router by browsing to http://192.168.2.1/ check your security, you will find out a lot of info from this area that might flash up a problem.I don't own that router so can't give advice on its settings but you should be able to solve most problems from here and linksys forum help.

we're in a rural area so the router is unsecured. the linksys forum suggested port forwarding, but weren't clear on specifics. i thought someone here might have experience with one and a success story to report.

In my experience SL hates wireless - period. Additionally Linksys is a notoriously crappy router. If I want any kind of tolerable functionality during my SL experience I just jack directly in. If I want to be able to roam about my RL house a bit and I am willing to put up with lag and possible crashes I connect to our Netgear wireless router and it is a tradeoff for mobility but it doesn't suck as hard as the Linksys did. HTH

thanks Brigid...btw, I originally posted through a friend's account; the Brigid dreamscape response is to the question posted by ecclesia hawker.
The lag happens on all computers connected to the internet through the router, using a wired ethernet connection. I don't even try the wireless connection.
I I plug the SL computer directly into the modem, the problem of course is that then other family members can't get on the internet through the network.
Before I get a new router, I'm interested in whether anyone has been able to make port forwarding work to get a faster connection on their linksys router.

Hi,
I'm using a Linksys WRT52G router with my computer connected via ethernet to a port on the router. ISP is Time-Warner Roadrunner. I am not having any problems connecting to and using second life. There is nothing special about the setup of the router.
I have updated the router to the current firmware version to solve various non-SL connection problems. I did, however, have to setup the firewall on my PC to allow incoming connections for all known Linden Labs subnets. This is covered in another post if you want the details please let me know.
Vince.

yes; I'd appreciate the info on configuring the firewall for the linden lab subnets.
my router has firmware updated, but it definitely is causing the SL crashes

Hi, I can't tell you exactly how to configure your particular firewall, but I can point you to a location that should help. To find information on how to configure a firewall for SL, log on to the SL support site at http://secondlife.com/support and search for subnets. Relevant entries are: How do I configure my hardware firewall (such as a router)? How do I configure my software firewall (such as Norton Internet Security, McAfee Personal Firewall, or ZoneAlarm)? What are Second Life's subnets? These should help you with your router and firewall. To update the firmware on your router go to http://www.linksys.com/Find your router and follow the instructions for updating the firmware on the router. BE VERY CAREFUL!!! Updating your router with the wrong firmware or if the update is incomplete can turn your router into a doorstop. I looked and did not find your particular model listed. Double check the model #. Hope this helps, Vince. I'd post the direct URL's but you can't access the site until you're signed in.
