Has anyone tested the newest offering from Nvidia.

This 8800 Ultra is supposed to be faster then the GTX.

Totally > spec <

However anyone who buy this for SL i will personally laugh at, its way overkill :P ,just buy a 8800 @ to ultra easy, tho the temp on the 8800 is already insane -.-

Geez another 8800 model already. I have the GTS and while other games look incredible, SecondLife has awful graphics so it won't make much of a difference.

I have a 320mb 8800GTS. Kickass performance for less than half the cost of a GTX. It has only half the memory of a 640mb model, but is nearly as fast. At this point in time, there are no "slow" 8800 cards.

According to this article, the Ultra will go for over 800 bucks for roughly a 15% performance gain over a GTX. Personally, for that kind of money, I'd do a decent motherboard/processor/RAM upgrade.

I drooled when I saw the specs on the card..... then almost had a heart attack when I saw the price. $800+ ????

Only paid $280 for my 8800 GTS. Too bad SL's graphics arent taking advantage of it. :(

Every other game I own (all modern, high-end graphics ones) are running on my PC with every setting cranked to the MAX!!! WOOT!

BUT- consider this- running the GTX or Ultra will also require you to have an adequate Power SUpply. At least 450 watts. More for SLI mode. Then that starts getting pricey. Anyone wanna cough up another $500-$800 for a 1 KW PSU??? :D

You can also force the nvidia use things like anti alias, anisotropic filtering and vsync, which significantly improves the graphics of second life. Of course it wont be up to the same level as recent single player games.
With a slower gfx card you will just simply get bad performance if you turn on things like vsync, anti alias and such and then it really do indeed help with a faster gfx.

I have the 8600 GTS which is a nice card for SL. I can run up AA and AF to max, turn on vsync and still kick up 50 fps in a normal sim with a few avatars around. SL looks really good with 16x AA. :P

My 7600 dropped its guts last night after an all day session, nearly burnt my fingers on it getting it out, dropped my dodgey 6600 in and wow the whole computer is so slow now, even with SL throttled back so I could just get around and chat, got 2 shutdowns while on the grid which is what the card was doing in the old PC, but time to buy a new one this morning 8000 series sounds good, 8800 if I can find one.

I have this 8800GTS. It runs circles around the 7800GT it replaced. What I really find interesting is that the 8800 seems to draw less power than the 7800. I'm getting by with a 550w power supply. Its factory overclocked, and is fairly quiet. Before you get any 8800, make sure you have enough room in your case. These cards are huge, and the GTX cards are also very long cards.

Yes! What Teeny said! These cards take TWO slots, and weigh a bit more too. If you notice on mine (geek that I am, I took pics), it'll take 2 slots and is a tad longer than my 6800. Not even sure if I'll be able to squeeze in another one later.

Hmm I went the GF8800GTS, cost me $600AU iwith a new 550w quality powersupply, lucky it did fit in the case ok, seems good so far though haven't hammered it yet with WoW or CoH, or hit max settings in SL yet
Computerspeed over all seems great in contrast with the 6600 :)

Actually Tegg, WoW wont show much improvement. Its made to run well even on the lowest end systems. I've seen it played on 2 different systems with 2 different older Nvidia cards and there wasnt much difference. This is also why it has many players (among other reasons).

Best ways to see what it really can do: Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, Half-Life 2, Elderscrolls:Oblivion, and F.E.A.R. To see how you rank against other machines- Futuremark's 3DMark 06 (3d Benchmarking app)

Try running one of those games if you have them. But this time, crank everything up as high as you can. Except maybe resolution? Not all monitors can handle 1600x1024 ;)

All I can say is, in Battlefield 2 & 2142, I turned up all the graphics, even AA, and I seldom ever ever ever EVER get a lag spike now.

You're right not much difference in Wow & SL, but CoH is heaps better, haven't tried anything else yet as I'm not a FPS gamer really. Just wanted something that would take longer runs well but have reserve there running 2 monitors for when upgrades happen.

Iknow it's working on Coh because it pulled too many amps for my UPS, it wnet into overload and shut down so had to take the monitor off the UPS

Maybe try something that use dx10 ?, could try this

GeForce 8800, Windows Vista,
ForceWare Drivers 100.64 or higher,
512MB system memory, 256MB video memory
Cascades

Eeh dont tell me someone still use under 1024x768 O.o on these cards youd be better off with a lower card since it wont do much diffrence unless you start going at 1440/1600+ resolution -.-

heh im pondering getting one of these : p just cause when you spend so much time infront of computers might as well use big 'uns: p

24" , 1920x1200 / 30" , 2560x1200

(now if SL could actually stop scaling from 1280x1024 since that seems to be max -.-)

8800 GTS = $290 (american). Not bad, which is why I got one (and with a $20 rebate too!) Thank You IRS & Income Tax Returns!!! :D

8800 Ultra = $830, if you reeeally wanna be the Uber-Hardcore. A lil' much for my wallet, but by next year it'll prolly be cheaper. (pricing gathered from Newegg.com)

If you are considering buying an 8800 of any type you should consider that it has been designed for Vista.

It will work with XP but you will not be able to use it to its full potential due to its Directx capabilities.

I use a 8800 GTS with 640mb and Vista, yes Vista and for those of you out there that have problems with Vista and SL, I have not had any problems with SL.

The graphics and speed are amazing, there is a considerable improvement over my last card with SL, SL runs much faster and smoother with excellent graphics.

Its mainly other games you will notice most improvement though as already mentioned.

Only downfall with the 8800 cards, they can be a bit noisy with their own cooler/built in fan.

Fully recommend one.

And not forgetting, ram also plays an important role in the speed of SL.

Just to add, going back to the original thread, I don't think you will experience any differences with SL if you use the Ultra compared with the GT, GTS or GTX cards.

Ultra is really for high end games..

Save your money and if you can afford it, buy 2 smaller 8800 cards and run them together if your motherboard allows you. That would be as good as the Ultra on its own.

i kinda was gonna get one of those overkill cards mainly because it will be a part of a better system. I skimped on ram and the video card but got a really good motherboard and the fastestest cpu and most up to date one around when i made this system with the intention being to replace the graphics card and ad ram when a better card was out

I have the 7900gts nvidia and honestly i think SL blew it up but then I am only operating on 1 gig of ram right now :)

HOLY CRAP Usagi!!!

You'd almost be better off ordering from USA & having it shipped to you.

And Larrie Lane is right- best bet is stick to the lower end of the spectrum: 8800 GTS or lower, and eventually have 2 running in SLI mode.

Which is my next step!!;) Right after adding a few more SATA drives and a Water-Cooling system

Well exchange rates would help some...but prices do drop quickly.
