Wooo hoo another mac user. BTW for you own reference there is a mac technical issue sub forum in the technical issues form. that would have been a better place to post any trouble with the mac beta sl client. To the problem. What exactly is the problem? Saying it doesn't work doesn't really tell any one anuff to know what's going on. We need facts! it would be great to know some facts. What model of apple computer is it? How much ram dose the computer have, what version of os x is she using. When she launches the app. What exactly happens? The console, /applications/utilities/console , can be used to find out what's going on with almost any application. For even more detail. Right click or control clicking on the sl application icon will give an option "show package Cantonese" this can be used to get to the real application. Allow you to run the app in terminal mode. Terminal mode will show you what the apps doing. even when it just appears to be hanging and not starting up properly. If you need help feel free to contact me through AIM: demegod. I'd be happy to talk to you, and or her directly to help figure out what's going on, and what she can do about it.

As much as I hate to admit it, I'm in a similar position as speel. I've only used an iBook to play music and dvds and never installed anything. I've got the .dmg file copied and ran it - which gave me an icon containing four files with the .tga telling me to drag the 'hand' to the applications folder and "...". I don't know what's supposed to happen after that. Can someone fill me in on how installing .app onto an iBook using OSX. It just meets the requirements to run SL, and I just wanted to see how it looks on it. Thanks

Instructions for installing Sl on macs:
Okay, once you've downloaded the .dmg, double click on it and then drag the application (the hand icon) from the folder that pops up and into your application folder.
Do not double click on the hand icon in the folder that pops up when you double click the .dmg file, that won't do anything, and that's probably what your problem is.
After you've copied it over to your application folder, open your application folder and find the hand icon in there. Now double click it.
If you need anymore help please feel free to ask.

What if I don't have a hand icon? When I 2xclick the .dmg there's a folder type thing created that has 4 files and none of them look like that. The second life .app file looks like a peice of paper with a pencil - is this a real problem or no? Just want to know for sure before I start dragging things to the applications folder and losing them.

While the SL files are still in the dmg disk image, thier icons look more like you describe.
Make a folder in your OS X Applications Folder, and call it what you wish - I used '2nd Life' for mine. Drag the four files from the disk image to that folder. Then unmount the disk image.
Now look in the folder, and you'll see one of those four icons now looks like a green hand. Double-click it to start the app.
FYI - I am a Mac user myself, using a Mac Mini. Unfortunately, I can tell you from my own experience that a Mac that only barely meets the 'minimum specs' won't be very satisfactory for playing Second Life. You'll have lots of problems with textures not loading correctly, or with them reloading constantly, and your frame rate will suck. I would not recommend trying to use SL on any system that doesn't have at least twice to four times that much memory on the video card, and at least 1 GB of ram memory on the computer. The published spec of a memory card with 32 MB memory and a computer with 512 MB RAM is barely enough to get a taste of SL.

I did as you described and the copied .app file seems to do nothing. I'll have to check the specs on this iBook again and fiddle with that procedure you've given 'cause this can't be that difficult. =\ Thanks for the help though.

A mac can run SL just fine, dont be telling people that "macs" only meet the minimum specs. A mac Mini is certainly minimum spec, an iBook probably wont run it at all, but lots of Macs run it fine. The problem with the previous poster is that they have changed which program opens their "*.apps" files is all, that is why the icon is different.

The problem with the previous poster is that they have changed which program opens their "*.apps" files is all, that is why the icon is different. Please re-read my post. I stated "I can tell you from my own experience that a Mac that only barely meets the 'minimum specs' won't be very satisfactory for playing Second Life." I did not say that ALL Macs only meet SL's minimum specs. Certainly there are many higher-end Macs which will play SL just fine. What I was trying to point out was that the poster stated they were attempting to run SL with a system that only barely met SL's posted min specs. And as somone who has tried that, I can state that the min specs are not what you need to enjoy SL properly. To clarify: No system, Windows OR Mac, will give you a good playing experience with SL if the hardware only barely meets the posted minimum specs. You need a better system than the minimum specs if you want better than 2 to 5 frames per second for your screen refreshes, and if you want to see the textures in the game as they were intended to be seen. All that the min spec level assures you of is that the system won't choke completely when you first log on to the newbie area and try to move. I would recommend at least a video card with 128 MB memory on the card, and at least 1 GB of RAM in the computer, no matter what type of computer you are trying to use for playing SL. Also, I doubt that they assigned some other app to open .app files. If that was the case, NONE of their OS X native programs would work. The different icons he described are precisely what I see when I look at the files while they are still on the Disk Image (dmg). If it isn't running after he copies those files to his local drive, as he says, then I suspect there is some other issue, such as he isn't at a new enough version of OS X. I would recommend trying again after the new release of 1.7.4, on Monday. Download the fresh client software then, and try again.
