For weeks now I have been getting strange splotches on my avatar, everyone can see them when it happens.

Its not only on my avatar anymore, but they appear on the ground, in the clouds, on plants, and on files i upload, etc.

Its really strange, when its on me, everyone sees it, but im the only one who sees it on the terrain, etc. Sometimes they even appear on other avis- but they cant see it.

What is it?

It happened after I installed a logitech mic and changed sound drivers. Im not sure if its just a coincidence or if it has anything to do with it

But this is ruining my sl experience. Also I hear this real staticy sound take place, and then these bursts of color follow.

Here is a photo of the worst yet- the clouds were covered in them, so nasty.
http://i19.tinypic.com/2mfyhdt.jpg

I also sent in a bug report although i`m not sure this is a bug- no response or help, of course.

Please save me.

Stuff that might cause this
- avatar vertex on? (preference/sl)
- ram dying
- vid card dying/to warm
- overclocking
- unsupported vid card
- drivers outdated

When you change outfit then it uploads that texture to SL get corrupted so anyone can see wierdness on your char

I'm not entirely sure this is the best solution. The reason is, usually when you get corruption due to a faulty video card, the artifacting is random. The screen shot looked like he was seeing icons or widgets.

First, Jess, make sure ALL of your drivers are up to date, especially your video drivers.

If the problem persists, try *removing* your sound drivers since you said it started happening after you updated them. The manufacturer of your sound card should have a method for ensuring that ALL of your sound drivers are removed. Once you do that, try SL again.

If the problem is still there, then it may have been a coincidence with the sound drivers, and your video card has failed.

If the problem does go away, then try installing your sound drivers once again. It is possible that when you updated the drivers, the old drivers were not properly removed. Since at this point, you have done a complete uninstall of the drivers, the new ones should install properly.

Hi, i didnt remove or put in new drivers or anything, all I did was install a logitech mic and tried to skype with it, it was not picking up my voice so i went into preferences on both skype and my computer, and i changed things in there, it had spots where u could change ur audio device and i did.

Secondly, I have not updated my graphics card in a long while, and since you both said to I guess I really need to do that first then go from there.

well, when I go to ati`s site, all there is for my card (x600) is a catalyst driver.

When i try to install it it tells me the update can not be installed on my machine and to contact my notebook provider for updates.

Sigh. I guess ill check their website for something and hopefully it`s there.

Often, notebook video card drivers are slightly different then the chip manufacturer, in this case ATI. For example, my notebook has an nVidia card, but I can't get the drivers from nVidia, I have to get them from Toshiba. Try going to your notebook manufacturers website, and getting the drivers from there. Good luck

On sl now and it just made the staticy sound and then a ton of objects in SL received the splotches

UGH

Ok so is video and graphics card the same thing? Cos I updated my graphics card and im not sure if thats also called a video card..

Thanks

to me it looks like defect VRAM on the graphic card that get corrupted memory and data that jump from one block to another

Anything he upload & avatar texture wich is baked on your client then sendt up to SL, (stored in vram/ram) get corrupted <clientside send to server, then sendt to anyone who see' him, so yeh it can be vid card.

~.~dunno you should take some ramtest/tempreading/run around house a few times chanting or something, cant really think right now <.<

So is video and graphic card the same thing?

Becuase I only saw updates for graphic card, nothing about a video card

But yeah, problem definitely still persisting even after I updated things, still a staticy sound before the splotches appear.

Thili- How do i run those tests?

Im a complete idiot when it comes to computer hardware

You could try this thing, let it do a few loops if you get graphic corruptions you might have a heatproblem

SL is notoriously straining on rendering and usually send my temp way higher then most of the games i play

3dmark2003

Yeh vidcard/graphics are the same, but some uses shared video ram with motherboard if that ram is starting to die it can affect your visual when its strained to, usually only shows up if you are in a heavy game/app, happend twice to me ever,

one way to test ram is

http://www.memtest86.com

(highly recommend running this whenever anyone get a new ram, they may seem fine for a long time, loop this once and youll know if you want to replace it or not, 1 error ~ replace it, ram has looong warranty nowadays)

Note this one has to be burned/copied to cd/dvd/disk/usb (?) and run a long time, but if any errors show up you have then have a dying ram, wich can corrupt any files/images ect that you recive/copy/send

You can run perfectly fine with ram that is corrupt, but dont do it for long as it will start to mess around

Things that happend when i found out mine was dying on me;
- viewing pictures looked like smashed up jpg's even tho they where tga
- basicly anything i sendt/recived got randomly corrupted, not fun
- documents had randomly wierd characters when reopened o.o

If you could do this , click start / run / dxdiag (enter)
then save all that information, and post it ,kinda wondering what you are running on still, could be motherboard viadrivers, or errors in that dxdiag showing up.

Its pretty long so youd have to use the # thingie in forum to post it (looks like (code)insert text here(/code))

it will turn up like this but allow alot more text, this is the pc im on right now;

Text limit 30.000 chars >.<

Don't know if this helps...
But I got effects like these some time back and NOT in Second Life... But what I found was that it was due to an overheated system (opening my computer helped  )

Thili- Tysm. Trying to install the 3dmark but its showing that it has 2 hours on it- thats strange.

So if my ram is dying I just buy new ones and place them in my laptop and that will take care of it?

I know i dont have shared ram though, I made sure of that before purchasing.

About heating up- Hm, well my laptop doesnt set on the most cool of places and I have no laptop cooler so not sure what to do there.

Oh yeh 3dmark is slooow to install, try the newest O__o .... just gave you the 2003 since SL doesnt really use much of the new fancy dx stuff anyway.

(ram is vid card requirement to even run these ~.~)
2006-580mb-dx9-256mb+-hdr/sm3.0-pixelshader3.0-16bit
2005-286mb-dx9-128mb+-pixelshader2.0
2003-178mb-dx9-32mb+

If its ram and youre on laptop hope you have insurance, cause they arent cheap usually to replace ~.~, most have least 5-10-15 years warranty tho.

Yep but on laptops they can cost 2-3-4-5-6 times what a desktop one cost, where you live and what kind O__o, laptop ones are dinkier (smaller) then desktop tho, some laptop ones can be quite odd if its a name brand one of a kinda oddity out of this world edition ~.~ dunno if they exsist anymore either :P

Most newer pc's must have 2 matched to even start now, didnt use to care about that before on older tho, now they usually comes in 2 every time you buy one, 1gig~512x2 , 2gig~1024x2,ect

Oh when I first got this laptop I was looking at extra RAM, its not too expensive so thats not a problem if I need to rebuy.

That program I tried downloading took a ton of hours and i had to cancel it and shut down. Will try it again tomorrow morning and let it download all day

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.
