This afternoon, approx. 4 EST I began to have a progressively worsening crash problem. At first, I was able to get in SL for about five minutes, before my entire computer would restart.

I come back now, and It crashed after about thirty seconds, but isntead just goes back to my desktop, and the crash report logger opens.

I could use some help, to try to find out what is wrong.

Does uninstalling and reinstalling SL work?

Crashes could be almost anything, most likely just SL screwing up, but the reboots are a lot more troubling -- those point to a possible thermal or electrical problem, and those can be difficult to diagnose.

It's not rebooting anymore, right? How hot is it there? How hot is your video card running?

What kind of video card do you have? How long have you had it? Do you know what kind of power supply you have? (make/model/wattage/+12V amperage/etc)

I thought that the heat/electrical might have been a problem. I downloaded a monitor to find that everything was running well within normal limits. I have reinstalled SL twice.

My computer has been acting up in general, I am going to be reformatting soon.

Sounds like your video card is cooking. The time frame you describe sounds exactly like overheating.

It could also be that you have bad RAM.

Well, the installation is not going too well. Its been sitting at "installing devices" for over an hour now...

*update*

It seems that my RAM clock was set erroneously. I have fixed it, and completed the installation. Everything seems to be working fine.

ok that is the exact symptom minus the vpu recovery error message that happens when an ATI video card gets stuck in an infinite driver loop. If you have an ATI card IM me and I will walk you through the fix. It is a ball buster. You can get the error without the message if you don't have the catalyst driver installed that has the "smart gart" feature.
