When I try to log in to SL the progress bar moves forward about an inch and stalls. After two minutes I get the, not very useful, error message: "Unable to connect to Second Life. Despite our best efforts, something unexpected has gone wrong."

I have checked the status page but it says all is well. Any ideas?

Happens quite alot can be various reasons, firewall, router, wireless, ectect.

You could try to make a shortcuit and add login info , then it will try to log on till it gets if , even if system says you cant log on untill xx.xx.xx date

First login help

Creating a fast way to log in SL without entering password

(you cannot use this when a update is availible, so keep a normal shortcuit)
create new SL shortcuit,
open properties,
find shortcuit tab,
in target add

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -login Firstname Lastname password

( first/lastname your SL character name + password )

Thanks for the quick reply :-) I did try restarting the computer and disabling the firewall and I am not using wireless. I was able to log in yesterday with exactly the same setup (at least I think it was exactly the same). I will try rebooting the router but I can’t imagine that will help. I will make a shortcut with username and password to save me a couple of clicks though.

Well despite my misgivings, restarting the router seems to have solved the problem.

SL can make some routers totally crash bomb out , dont have one myself by seen some others who has their router go ballistic when using SL.

I suspect that it was not SL that caused the problem. I would guess, if pushed, that it was the file sharing program i had been running before SL. Thanks for suggesting the router though Tilly.
