Hi. My wife is having probs with her sound. Any sounds in SL, including user interface sounds, (button clicks etc), also her ingame sound such as wind, getsures, typing and even her music has a "frying" sound. This isn't a hardware issue, as I bought her a sound card to see if that would fix it...but no go. Still the same problem. She was using her onboard sound card, now she is using a sound blaster. It only happens while she is in SL. Her windows sounds are fine..she can even pull up winamp and connect to a stream while running SL...and the sound is fine. I have pin pointed the problem as being an SL problem. Any Ideas? And also, has anyone else had this issue? Thanxx in advance

Well you certainly ruled out the obvious. All sound in SL is handled by the FMOD library which is a clean import to SL. If you have already uninstalled/re-installed SL, I'd look to the FMOD page for further help. The current version of SecondLife/fmod.dll is 3.74 in case that is significant. Good luck. added: also, SL uses the EAX functions of a soundblaster for directional audio which most music players and many games don't; you may try disabling these in the control panel.

I have an Audigy 2 ZS, and I've been consistently getting what you describe for the past few builds now. Indeed, it would seem that something in SL's sound routine has changed... wonder what it is? Strange that only a couple people seem to have been affected.

I've noticed the crackly audio for nearly a year now. But haven't tracked down a consistent cause. The one constant for me is very long session length. So, I get the crackly sound after I've been online in SL for more than 4 hours. I believe the crackling is the wind. In a windy sim, the crackling is worse than it is in a stale-air sim.

I had the same prob on a Sound Blaster Audigy 2. Some of the times when I did, I'd hit CTRL-ALT-DEL for Windows Task Manager after closing SL, and noticed it was still actually running SecondLife.exe (for whatever reason). Closing that "appendix" of an instance and relaunching SL made the crackles go away. This didn't work every time, however. Here's an additional question to consider: do the crackles come up more frequently when you've got other audio programs playing sound on your computer?

The sound always corrects itself after closing out Second Life. Restarting SL will correct the problem for a time. But it may or may not start right back up. It will also periodically clear up and sound fine.

From: Thraxis Epsilon The sound always corrects itself after closing out Second Life. Restarting SL will correct the problem for a time. But it may or may not start right back up. It will also periodically clear up and sound fine. That's related but different from the experiences I had--usually, once SL was running, it'd either have those crackles from the beginning or not at all. But sounds like the "crackles" themselves are the same thing. I think one of the worst (to my ears) was rezzing a new prim. That sort of earth-moving sound and the way it crackled when glitched was awful. I've not seen a solid repro for this bug yet but it seems like we've all had Audigys? Anyone getting it with onboard sound (e.g. Realtek or SoundStorm) or anything?

I'm getting it consistently, right from the get-go. No waiting involved, and no other programs running. It's most noticeable when there's a music stream going -- sounds kinda like a low-speed fan hitting a piece of paper.

I had an Audigy 2 for a while, but never experienced any similar issues. I've recently upgraded to the Audigy X-Fi without a problem. My first thought would be to goto www.creative.com and download the latest drivers for your soundcard.

My Audigy wasn't in long enough to experience issues in SL, but it was causing my machine to bluescreen (determined after tracking down the error code on the BSOD to something experienced only by Audigy ownered). I replaced it with a Turtle Beach Catalina and haven't had an issue or a BSOD since (and the swap happend over a year ago).

I run an audigy and have heard the crackling as well...
It usualy is noticealbe in streaming audio but it only happens sometimes. Usualy in long sessions as mentioned above.
I'll try playing with the EAX settings and see if that makes any difference.

I got an X-Fi and dont have any issues with SL crackling. HOWEVER when running other programs such as Skype while SL is running it causes them to start crackling, but they all eventually fix themselves, just takes some time. Obdviously SL has a sound issue.

OK, guys, i got the sound working correctly.....as Introvert Petunia had previously posted, it lies in the FMOD DLL library version...all i had to do was update my sound drivers, and all is now great. no probs with sound whats so ever. Evidently the drivers provided a better version of the libraries needed to work with the new FMOD library. The FMOD library is what drives SL sounds. So Props to Introvert Petunia for that info. You guys might want to try a sound card driver update as well, as that might work for the audigy user being in the Creative Labs chipset as mine was a creative labs soundblaster 16 PCI. An update may also work for you onboard sound card users as well. Thanxx for the great info, Introvert Petunia! PROPZ!
