Today i just got my system up and running it has a Athlon XP 2200+ 1.7Ghz(i know its not the greatest),GeforceFX 5700VE 256mb 8X AGP, and 768mb DDR ram....Soon as i got it up and running with all updates to the newest for everything, i decided to get SL again. About 10 mins into the game it Freezes. I tried reinstalling and relogging a few times. Still no go. So here i am thinking that my video is Faulty and Overheating, so i went and got 3DMark. I can get through all the Video Tests just peachie. Then i get to the CPU Tests, BAM, Complete Lockup around 4 seconds into the test.
About 2 weeks ago i had a few other parts in that died. I replaced the Processor with the same thing and the video card was a Radeon 8500 64mb. Worked fine then.
Now i put the new CPU in and the New Video and it locks up....
Any Ideas?

IANACT, but I had a similar problem when I first got my new box together, with an almost similar setup (replace P4 with Athlon XP): my new system would lockup about a minute or two into using any 3D app. I thought it could be the memory, but if the memory was working before, that's probably not it (and to which you're lucky, as I replaced it three times, getting more expensive sticks).
The way I resolved my issue was by doing a BIOS flash of the mobo. That fixed the issue right quick. Although, before anything else, I'd also double check the processor fan and see if it's seated properly.

could be both really, i have had similar things, : Video card to warm , locks up when doing things to stress it : Cpu / to warm when stressed , locks up. a third option is to just push the ram sticks but more down , sometimes when i changed anything those got bit on the loose side and just locked up entire machine when i did to much. The ram same brand or mixed ?, can be picky if its noname brands, mixed a few and some dont like eachother, but im guessing it has the same speed ? pc2100/pc3200 ? You can always test your ram using http://www.memtest86.com/ , if they got bad it should show there (dont really need to run aaalll the tests it has to do that)

Well. Im guessing its something with the game and the computer...right now im using my eMachine(its a piece but it used to run SL just fine), it freezes at random times...can be on 3 hours or 3 seconds. The Computer i described in my first post is my main, i used it alot. I just found out i forgot to change the Bus speed for the processor. I had it on 266(?) instead of 333(maybe that was a problem). Now i have ran into another problem...i now cannot get the computer to start up. Hit the button...nothing...hit the button...nothing, im assuming that this is my Power Supply going dead. Going to go buy a generic power supply and test it out and see if it starts up. If it doesnt im thinking the new Mobo i bought died(dunno if that would be right but its what i will assume). Also i cant get my computer to notice that i have a SATA(Serial ATA) 80gig HD in my system. It can see it in the VIA Tech. RAID Program on the mobo, but no where else. I also think that my old 15.7 gig is failing also. Everytime i accually get it to start. I almost get to windows(i get to the screen where it is all black before you see a big WELCOME)and it freezes right there. For the past month or so it has been spazzing out and having to be wiped and reinstalled. So i went and bought a 10 gig Quantum 7,200 rpm HD for 2 dollars just to test and see if it is the HD....thats when i noticed, it wont start :/
Anymore Ideas?

Yup just had some major problems with a GeForce 6600 - 256Mb card by Gigabyte.
I'd put this in new computer I'd been building - AMD 3000+ 1gb ram Asus mobo A7N8X. I was running this with a 450watt power supply.
SL would crash randomly.. sometimes after 2 or more seconds. By crash I mean rebooting the comptuter 80% of the time.
SL is the only application that would do this, and I tested it on 2 diff motherboards, same results.
I put an old layaround Radeon 8500 all in wonder in the new machine, and no crashes.
I'm currently loaning the gfx board to a friend who doesn't play SL (but a variety of other applications) to see if the card itself is stable..

From: Siggy Romulus I was running this with a 450watt power supply. What make and model? (Or better yet, what's the max amperage for the +12V rail?) If you're running a 6600 with less than 16A, it's almost certainly going to fail. Hobo: Yeah, if you're running an eMachines box with a new video card, I'd look at that power supply. What's the max amperage for the +12V rail? (It should say on the side of the power supply.)

I'll have a looksee when I get home tonight - the thought of getting another video card doesn't really tingle my happy place atm. Perhaps we should start putting together a database of cards and technical probs/info if one doesn't exist already - helping players steer towards cards that work well, and pointing out technical issues/fixes that are known.

I was actually suggesting that you might look at getting a new power supply. that'd be a lot cheaper. (Assuming that it's what's causing the problem, that is.)

I know, I should have been clearer; I will check it when I get home AS the thought of having to get a new gfx card doesn't tingle my happy place... And now that I'm home, your absolutely right - I didn't even think to check the amperage when I got this case as it came with a 450w, I assumed it wouldn't be just 15 amps (which it is).. I just ordered a spanking new powersupply from newegg, and hopefully It'll solve the probs... I'll keep you posted and if it works out ok I'll post the link to the powersupply - quite affordable for those of us that don't care if it comes in a flat silver finish and doesn't have swoopty blue neon lights out the yang Also I had a check around the plethora of spare parts and crap at home -- it would seem on average that the powersupply that comes with most cases lying around here varies from 12A to 15A.... Siggy.

No no no, i would never try and put something new in a eMachine. I have 2 computers, this junk eMachine and my computer that was built by ME. Turns out....CPU failure, my 400 PSU blew out and killed my 2 day old CPU :/. Going to have to go and buy another CPU, got a 450 Powmax now. Probably going to get a AMD dual core. Dunno yet.
