I suddenly can't even get passed the 'detecting hardware' box, it's been working fine for months, I uninstalled and reinstalled and now I can't get passed that box?

add a -noprobe to SL shortcuit, see if that does something.
"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -noprobe ^ Normally |

Are there any other command line options for the SL executable ?
For example, is there anything that might solve the problem with SL not supporting the special characters in the "Documents and Settings" folder ? I can not start SL due to this bug... |

That is not a fix. It is a work around. It does work and I had tried it immediatly after not being able to get in through my normal account.
My point is that I do not want to have several accounts in my PC... |

The -noprobe doesn't work on mine. Somewhere after 1.7 SecondLife stopped working on my laptop. I have an Intel Extreme 855 which is specifically listed (now at least) as not supported on the Technical section, but it used to work great before 1.7.
