Increased RAM - VASTLY Increased Performance

Just a note to say that I upgraded my machine a few days ago from 512 MB to 1.5 GB of RAM and found that SL's performance has increased beyond my wildest expectations.

My system specs are as follows:

ASUS A7N8X motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (running at 2 GHz)
1.5 GB DDR SDRAM
ATI Radeon 9600 AGP video card, 128 MB RAM

Prior to my upgrade I thought I had what was OK performance in SL. Some places were smooth and lag-free, most were moderately laggy, and most popular places -- crowded clubs, and the like -- were like watching a slideshow, 1-2 FPS max.

I got the new RAM the other day and installed it, and deliberately went straight to one of the laggiest places in SL -- Bad Girls Club, with 31 avatars in attendance.

It was still somewhat sluggish, but nowhere near the lagfest it was when Katt and I were regulars there.

I got 2 512 MB sticks of Kingston PC2700 SDRAM from NewEgg.com for well under $100, including shipping. The 512 I had already cost me nearly that by itself a year ago.

I STRONGLY recommend that if you're only running 512 MB that you consider upgrading. This has made all the difference in the world to me.

:p yes 512 ram is horrible nowadays, 1024+ STRONGLY recommended, theres a huge diffrence, no harddrive grind more, loading (especially in games) silent,

Just having a operating system, + various programs in background can take 300 ram quite easy, start SL and there goes +300-900 ram more ..dont got enough? then its harddrive swap time, wich just slows everything down.

First time i upgraded ram was from 512 to 2048 ,,, just..whoa, ^^

RAM is cheap these days. Get as much as you can afford, or as much as your system can handle.

Agreed, for SL especially if you want good performance.. just blow the wad on some more RAM. I have 2 gigs now compared to my previous 512. Like night and day.

Have 4 gig ram on one of my pc's its dead silent doing just about anything on it now, windows load i barly see the screen , 6.2sec to load :P (according to bootvis)

can have 4-5 SL's up (sure it slow blame sl :p) , loads of programs up and never really notice any slowdown, its bit overkill, but load heavy games ...welll the load went down by alot :P any game that always keep loading or has tiny maps , hl2/doom3/quake3, sure they are detailed but toooo small maps.

Only time i hear the drive working is when some blah virus prog/scan/defrag hits.

Boy y'all are sure tempting me! I'm function on 64 MB! You can just imagine how that is!

AND - you'll notice I said 64 MB and didn't put a typo and say k, cause I'm used to thinking of texture dimensions, and get told by CERTAIN PEOPLE that it wasn't a typo, but, and I quote literally here, "because you don't know what you are talking about."

coco <----- thinking about hanging out in technical forum from now on

NO WAIT - it's not 64! What was I thinking? 256! Still bad!

No - wait. I don't know what I have anymore. I'm thoroughly confused. I think it's 256.

I went from 512MB to 1GB and the game slowed down, but that's because at the same time I bought a new monitor with a larger display resolution.

In SL, Help | About SL will tell you how much RAM you have.
