My graphics totally mess up while trying to change appearance. It keeps loading the wrong visuals and flashes different textures. How can I fix this? I'm using a new Toshiba lap top. Thanks in advance

Most Laptops are not for Games / 3D Graphics.
Question : what GPU (Graphics Chip) is in your Laptop ?
Only ATI and NVIDIA GPU's are supported by SL.
The worst you can get is a Intel shared Memory Graphics Chip,
quite common in Laptops, not much hope to get it running
perfectly with SL.

EDIT : I just looked at the Toshiba Website - they have some pretty good Machines.
Example : the Qosmio F20 Series comes with a Geforce 6600 Go GPU,
this would be good enough.
If you have that, and SL still looks wierd, get the latest Driver from the NVIDIA Website and install it.

Corrupt baked texture

change your av clothes
pref just strip nakked
then edit/preference/network
and clear cache
relog

when in SL wait a few min
and put some things on, should clear the corruptness.

Virusprogs/lossy internet packets, randomness can cause this, getting rarer nowadays tho, used to be alot of it before.

Baked textures are 1 texture compressed from what your avatar is wearing, when you wear something in SL it download all the textures you wear to your pc, then flattens them to make 1 texture showing what you wear, then its uploaded to Secondlife, if it get corrupts everyone will see it to, usually looks like wierd screenshot pants (something) sometimes.

Flashing graphics can be vertex/agp setting issues

edit/preference/graphic details
toggle Avatar Vertex Program (on/off)

edit/preference/adv.graphics
toggle on/off ( ) enable agp

Some of those might be causing flickering to.

I see the same on my laptop (Intel 915 onboard graphics, 64 MB shared). Not only is the texture on the avatar mangled, it carries over to the previews in the appearance window, sometimes showing random data, sometimes part of the SL viewer window. I wouldn't really mind, but at least once it almost broke a piece of clothing. For quite some time I wasn't able to get it back to its older texture, even on another machine. Clearing cache, rebake textures and several changes of outfit fixed it eventually.

I know, i915 is listed as unsupported, but that was a real creepy experience ;)
