How to IM friend online while I offline?

A friend of mine (my partner) was online with me and then she crashed and was unable to log in again.

However she was able to IM me of her difficulty by sending offline message to my IM avatar whilst offline. (We have each others email addesses) The message came from IMAGE and was a godsend. My RL email does not accept IM's under options else I would be flooded with spam...

So my question is, if I know my friend is online and I wish to send them a message in game from offline... how do I do this please?

Using the SL IM system, you can't. An IM chat needs to be started by the in-world player. Now it's possible that your friend crashed before your last IM reached her, and so when it went to her email, it would generate a temporary email address she could reply to. This address typically lasts about 24 hours (sometimes a bit longer depending on the the colour of Philip Linden's underwear).

Your friend could then IM you in world by emailing that address. Currently it's not permitted to start a session from the outside because of the spam risks.
