Why was your password changed? Was someone using your account without your knowledge? They could have taken it, is that most of it? Its something you should really talk to support about...

The update to 1.7 did not include an automatic password change.

Check with Linden Labs Support and see if they can determine if the account was in use during the month while you were not in possession of the password. They might be able to trace the IP of the user, and therefore identify who accessed your account, changed your password, and stole your funds, if that is what happened. Also, check your account's 'transactions' for the period while you didn't have access. Were any payments or purchases made in that time? That may have left a record there, if someone other than you used your account and bought stuff or transferred funds to another Avatar.

I would certainly follow up on that with Linden Labs, as it sounds to me like someone hacked you and hijacked your account.

Check your account history to see where the $L7k went.

James? Edit your post so you don't state the actual name here, and then go contact the Linden Labs support people with your proof. Hopefully they will get your Lindens back, and they will punish the individual who did it.

(I believe it's a terms of service violation to name someone in a case like that, even if you're certain of the facts. Better safe than sorry. Wouldn't want to see you punished for trying to get justice.)
