So, first things first. Moved to a new internet connection, and I have constant minor packet loss to SL. Not a huge deal, internet path problem is probably at fault. However, I would like to get it resolved. The problem is, I need Linden help to resolve this, as I can't troubleshoot from the other end. Where do I send such a problem? Will Lindens look at it here? This is what I see: anti.darkness.nu Tue Feb 22 15:57:52 2005 Keys: D - Display mode R - Restart statistics Q - Quit Packets Pings Hostname %Loss Rcv Snt Last Best Avg Worst 1. private.darkness.nu 0% 213 213 8 5 8 35 2. 24.217.2.157 0% 213 213 8 6 8 29 3. 12.124.129.97 0% 213 213 9 6 9 21 4. gbr5-p40.sl9mo.ip.att.net 0% 213 213 10 6 9 27 5. tbr1-p013501.sl9mo.ip.att.net 0% 213 213 10 7 10 26 6. tbr1-cl2.sffca.ip.att.net 0% 213 213 58 55 57 67 7. gbr2-p10.sffca.ip.att.net 0% 213 213 54 50 53 70 8. gar1-p370.sffca.ip.att.net 0% 213 213 58 54 57 117 9. ??? 10. border5.ge4-1-bbnet2.sfo.pnap.net 0% 212 212 64 52 63 267 11. sim13.agni.lindenlab.com 11% 190 212 54 52 55 73
Now, normally I would attribute this to the sim server being at high load, and ICMP being a low priority protocol, but this matches up with the packet loss I see too, so I suspect this is actually a valid representation of the problem. Linden Labs -- can you help me out? I can bring this to the Tier 1 ISPs involved between, but I need a traceroute going the other direction (preferrably one using a consistent method like MTR above) so I can see if we have asymmetrical routing, and if the problem lies on the return path rather than the forward (which it appears to). Otherwise, can you bring this to PNAP from your side and see if you can resolve it that way? I can provide whatever diagnostics needed.

Unfortunately, the Forums are not a proper place to post IPs and traceroutes. You should contact support@secondlife.com directly.

At the risk of sounding possibly too 'aggro', are you telling me there is nowhere inside SL that one can report a connectivity problem except for a single email address which will never be responded to? This is either a really bad oversight or a joke?

it looks like you can get the address of the sim you're in if you look at Help > About SL or such. maybe that would work.

Linden Email Down for Upgrade
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The email server for Linden Lab is being upgraded, and we can't receive any emails until the upgrade is complete. Mail to individual Lindens, as well as to various general addresses such as support@lindenlab.com will bounce while the switch is being made. We're sorry for this inconvenience, and ask for your patience in resending your mails tomorrow morning.

This looks curious and I want to investigate further - ICMP loss indicates no local bandwidth problems, and the loss is happening at our server. Si thanks for the report. Sorry that it initially may have confused us.

Sorry that it initially may have confused us. Philip, Thank you for the reply -- it is also possible that the problem lies somewhere in the return path, should the routing be asymmetric at the sim server. I obviously have no visibility to this, but you're welcome to perform traceroutes back towards me @ anti.darkness.nu (24.182.131.186) (use -I flag, UDP traceroutes won't make it to the last hop) if this needs to be verified.

Si,
It would be incredibly helpful (if you have the time) to send me and chris@lindenlab.com an email in real-time if you see this happening again. Are you seeing that loss on sim13 right now? We aren't. If the loss comes and goes when the sim is loaded, that is important and definitely means we (LL) have a problem.

Actually I just logged in to look, i'm seeing 0.0 packet loss steady right now, testing confirms the same: challenger.darkness.nu(tos=0x0 psize=64 bitpattern=0x00Wed Feb 23 11:49:48 2005 Keys: Help Display mode Restart statistics Order of fields quit Packets Pings Host Loss% Snt Last Avg Best Wrst StDev 1. anti-p.darkness.nu 0.0% 51 0.6 0.7 0.6 1.3 0.2 2. private.darkness.nu 0.0% 51 7.9 8.9 6.8 17.8 2.3 3. 24.217.2.157 0.0% 51 8.0 9.8 7.7 23.0 2.8 4. 12.124.129.97 0.0% 51 8.2 10.5 7.6 20.3 3.4 5. gbr5-p40.sl9mo.ip.att.net 0.0% 51 8.1 9.5 7.3 23.0 2.7 6. tbr1-p013501.sl9mo.ip.att.net 0.0% 51 8.8 11.2 8.2 20.4 3.1 7. tbr1-cl2.sffca.ip.att.net 0.0% 51 55.3 55.4 51.9 76.1 4.1 8. gbr1-p10.sffca.ip.att.net 0.0% 51 50.5 52.2 49.1 68.8 3.9 9. gar1-p360.sffca.ip.att.net 0.0% 51 56.2 57.3 55.2 69.4 2.6 10. ??? 11. border5.ge3-1-bbnet1.sfo.pnap.ne 0.0% 51 54.6 55.1 52.9 63.9 2.3 12. sim13.agni.lindenlab.com 0.0% 51 57.5 59.8 57.1 69.9 3.1
I tested to sim436, my present sim, with the same results.
