Hi
We've just moved to the middle of nowhere and the best connection speed I can get is 230.4 kbps over a wireless usb modem. Proper Broadband is currently not available due to no capacity at the local exchange, and even then, quoted speeds are only 256 kbps (faster are advertised - for more money of course, but I am not confident of anythng much quicker than 256).
I can log in (and have just spent the last 20 minutes removing the large skybox some nice chap thought he would build over my land whilst I wasn't there). However, I basically can 't do anything more than just stand there.
I have had a bit of a tweak with the graphics settings, reduced the draw distance, etc, but that doesn't seem to make much difference. Can anyone advise me if a useable connection at this speed is possible, or of anything else I can adjust in the graphics settings - am a bit loathe to tweak too much without knowing what I am doing!!
Thanks
Joss

I had a problem with my broadband connection a few months ago and was running at similar connection speeds to you for a few days. Even with all the graphics settings turned right down to minimum I could only walk reliably if the sim was running really well. Anywhere even slightly crowded and I couldn't move.
The best way I found of moving around was to get a friend to TP me, even if it was only halfway across a sim, or using the camera to find poseballs or places to sit and jumping from one to the next.
Something I didn't think of, but which might have worked would have been to rez a box, sit on it and move that.
I also found that I became disconnected from the sim frequently, and was left completely unable to move, and any building would only be on my screen not on the server, but that might have been because of the problem with the the connection rather than just the speed.
You also might find that the wireless isn't helping, again I had to run on wireless usb for a couple of weeks recently and had terrible problems with crashing and disconnecting from the sim.

Satellite is not supported by Linden Lab, but I have used it for 18 months and it works OK, probably better than your 200K connection.
Hughesnet and Wild Blue are the two main competitors I know of.
