I haven't found any other threads relating specifically to my problem so I thought I would post here and see if anyone can help.
Soon after updating SL, I found that I couldn't STAY in SL. It continuously crashes no sooner than being on for a few minutes. This doesn't mess with my computer, slow anything else down, or disconnect my modem...it simply refuses to work. I meet all the system requirements and then some despite the fact that I am NOT running and NVidia or an ATI video card. Do I absolutly have to have one of these brands of video cards to run the new version of SL to prevent it from crashing...or is this just a common problem?
Everything, I might add, is running smoothly despite this crash problem.
Any suggestions?

I should add

I should add that I'm using windows XP home edition and I have an Intel 82845G video card with 64MB.
Anyone out there have suggestions on what I can do to get SL up and running again?

your screwed just like i am my friend. "now since the update your intel card no longer meets the minimun system requitrments" This is what i was told by several LL employees as well as tech support when i called, so unless u can change that graphics card u can join me in the un cared about discarded members of SL past. Thats basically the treatment ive received since this update. They dont seem to care about us " outdated" members. i basically got an "oh well" additude, but thats why your crashing and thats the only thing that will fix it. Hope ur not in my boat cuz this boat sux

The actual reality of this virtual reality is that those Intel things never met the system requirements in the first place. It's sad but true! Have a look here... It clearly states what's a minimum in order for you to be on SL. An "Intel 82845G video card with 64MB" does not meet the system requirements. I've heard of some even lowerspec systems performing, but that's a risk you take, like Russian roulette, or having sex without protection—or perhaps more accurately, leaky protection with HOLES. That being said, I DO hope you can get comfortably onto SL again, Vantage... perhaps the 1.7.1 patch being released later today will make a difference. Best of hope!

And this is why I'm confused. 1.6 worked wonderfully with my video card. I had no problems with lag, rezzing, textures...nothing. The new patch...hopefully puts me back on the map again...in the meantime...I need to search my other computers and see if any of them have a compatable video card in them. Question: Why does the BRAND of video card matter...do they not all do the same thing when it really comes down to it? So really, my system DOES meet the system requirements besides that it's NOT an NVIDIA or ATI. Sort of like it didn't get picked by the basketball team because it looked like it might not kick ass...but it really does. ;_; I cry for my intel.

My variation on abandoned

I have a laptop I bought (3 weeks ago) specifically to exceed SL's minimum requirements, including graphics by ATI - which now crashes routinely, but only in certain sims - others are fine. The folks charged with empyting the e-mail queue over at support have decided that my video drivers (the 9/2005 version) must be out of date, and by the way, you have to have OpenGL 2.0.
I'm sure that's written down *somewhere* - does anyone remember seeing it?

if u can do that your lucky. i have an E machines PC and i was told that the graphics card is in the motherboard and e machines will not let u upgrade the motherboard. so im basically screwed. Ive been playing SL for a year with this very card, never had any problems, till this update, so "oh well" for me and all my time money and effort put into this game. The additude people like me get is " sorry , dont let the door hit ya when u leave" Hope u have better luck upgrading

I heard similar stories with friends who were fine in 1.5 but 1.6 broke them. I'm going to leave the next bit for technical experts to explain more, but basically, BRAND is tied into this because NVIDIA and ATI just happen to be leaders in the field of making top-performing consumer gaming cards. So while you have many players on this basketball field, you only have so many Michael Jordans (prolly an nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX at this stage). They, as any well-rounded benchmark suite will show, can do a LOT more computationally. A lot more think power to process and pipe the graphics through... it's like Einstein to, well, most people. And besides that, those cards meet compliant standards sorta like how apartment buildings get safety checks. SL tries to send a set of instructions to an incompatible card, and it's like trying to order food in a Chinese restaurant without a bilingual menu. In an ideal world, SL would be accessible to many more. There should be a better guide explaining all this, since this concern comes up a lot. I'm sure someone's up to it.

Both of my computers have a motherboard graphic card (now drivers uninstalled), and an ati graphic card in a pci slot.
