Ugly gray boxes

Sorry to hear about all the people still having graphics problems. I guess I'm lucky, the update didn't break anything else for me, it's just not really improving much.

I've started to wonder, how much of the problem I'm experiencing is JUST because of the god-awful gray box/white outline placeholder texture the client is now using. I ABSOLUTELY FREAKING HATE IT!!!!! Assuming textures didn't take ANY longer to load than before, I think the perception would still be that they do, because previously, you saw smoke. It was transparent enough that you could see other objects through it, and it wasn't as intrusive. But now, you have this completely opaque, ugly texture on everything and there's NO missing it.

Please, Lindens, either a) give us back the old texture or b) give us the option to choose our own. With hard drive space so cheap these days, I don't understand why textures can't all be stored on the HD instead of transmitted each time I log in, but at least that one option would help.

At least go back to the old texture for phantom prims, attachments, Linden trees, and particles, because you can't collide with these so there's no point making them IN YOUR FACE.

I <3 the new loading texture. I see no reason for something to be appear insubstantial just because its texture hasn't loaded. A walkway, a building, a doorway is at least somewhat navigable with the new texture.

I agree, though, that attachments, trees, etc don't really benefit much from the box texture versus the cloud texture.

Furthermore, as Second Life goes to the Metaverse, and this becomes an open platform, Linden Lab risks lawsuit in court and [attachment culling] will, I repeat WILL be reverse in court.

The problem I have is more a matter of aesthetic than usability. The gray texture doesn't seem to do much to keep you from running into things, because a) the problem with flying into things has always been more a matter of running into things that haven't yet rezzed, so there was NO texture, clouds/gray boxes/anything b) p2p tp has resulted in a major reduction in the need to fly places c) I find I run into things more because the client is so unresponsive, I press up (or any other direction) and 10 seconds later my av starts flying up... and then continues even though I only briefly pressed the key, until I crash into something repeatedly... and then the client decides to catch up with the server, and I find myself back where I started.

So, while I'm sitting around waiting for the world to load and unable to fly because the controls are so unresponsive, do I want to look at masses of gray slashed with white lines in various shapes and sizes for 10 to 30 minutes, or do I want to see vague smoky outlines of objects that at least have some transparency so I can get a general view of the world? The problem with the grays is they're SOLID. They're ALL you see. The color blends in with NO landscape/buildings/location I've seen in any sim. They are HIDEOUSLY UGLY and COMPLETELY RUIN the immersive experience of SL. If it was just a floor texture on a flat, repeating surface it wouldn't be as much a big deal (though still ugly) but they just dont' work on all the organic structures and curves on items in SL. MOST ESPECIALLY when you consider the way textures have to be stretched/skewed to fit on objects.

The real problem, for me, though, is that it is now taking so unbearably long for the client to properly display the correct textures on all objects in the surroundings. In fact, I haven't seen this happen since 1.7. It just doesn't load them up and display them properly. I don't know if it's the interest list or caching or memory management, and frankly I don't give a flying fig. I just want it to work right and look pretty, and since 1.7 SL has been nothing but ugly to me.

I don't suppose anyone with extremely long lasting gray loading textures has managed to solve the problem? Or at least to figure out why they have the problem and other people don't?
