Hello,

I am currently having a problem with SL. Everytime I play it continues to crash no matter what I do. Doesnt matter what im doing, i continue to recieve this error:
"The instruction at "0x690e4484" referenced memory at "0x133a8964". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate program."
It then loads SL Crash Reporter (which gives no response, so I have to close it alt+ctrl+delete way). Here are my current specs:

Pentium 4 3.4 Ghtz
512 MB RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon X300 (64MB PCI)
Dx 9.0c
1440x900 32 bit color resolution

Can someone help me?

I assume from your account creation date that it's always done this and you've never been able to run SL successfully?

This is a laptop, correct? What manufacturer and model is it? Which video drivers are you using? Unfortunately, ATI doesn't provide official drivers for laptops, but you can use the third-party Omega Drivers. Those should work fine.

It runs for 5 min on average before it crashes.

Its an HP Compaq nx9600.
Im using version 6.14.0010.6483 which are the ATI drivers.

Yes, it is a laptop. The only thing I can think of is the fact that it is a widescreen laptop.

Those drivers might be a little old. Do the Omega drivers resolve the problem? Screen aspect ratio shouldn't matter. OpenGL apps can be scaled to run at any resolution or ratio.

I dont like the idea of using unoffical tweaked drivers. Nothing else on my computer has a problem with my video. Is there another solution that doesnt involve me having to get new drivers?

errrk Ati and drivers , how shocking , yes they bite bigtime when it comes to laptop drivers,, Omega drivers are the ones i used better then Ati's , heck they even suggest you should try them when something not work on newer games.

SL is pretty picky about video card, i even have some issues if i install my official temperature gpu drivers, you can always go back to your old drivers if they dont anything with SL,

Remember uninstall Ati drivers completly before even installing Omega's.

Ati drivers seem to be like this as of late " Ati releases drivers, Omega find all their bugs, fix most, release a new driver set on their pages.... Ati make new driver ,,, repeat

Heck they do the same with Nvidias ^^; and yes your drivers are pretty old, id get newer if i where you.

ATI doesn't usually even support laptop video period. They instead refer you to the manufacturer who is usually a couple of driver versions behind. The Omega drivers are sometimes the only way to get updated drivrs for your laptop. Omega drivers are ATI drivers that have been tweaked to improve performance and appearance plus they give you many more options than the stock ATI drivers.

ATI is allied with the creator of the Omega drivers, they approve of what he does. They would love to do what he does but they really can't because they have to make them usable to everyone and Omega drivers allow you to monkey with settings that would bankrupt them with techsupport problems.

I would definitly try the Omega drivers.

The Omega drivers are effectively a repackaged version of ATI's Catalyst drivers, only designed to be installed on a broader range of ATI hardware, and with some extra tweaking support turned on for greater control. Much of this already exists within ATI's drivers, it's just a matter of turning the switch to enable it.

The reason you'll see more problems in SL than in another app is because SL uses a different part of the OpenGL spec, including features that other software may not ever use. As such, driver support can be limited. ATI's newest drivers work really well. Older ones, not so much.

Honestly, I'd try the Omega drivers. They'll almost certainly fix your problem, and if you find you're too unsettled by the third-party thing, they uninstall smoothly as well.
