What Happend To The Audio?

Two patches ago, I began to notice a decrease in recieving certain parts of audio in SL.

I have reported it as a bug and let Kona know what was happening.

At first I thought it was just me - my avatar/account seems to be haunted with Murphy's Law and other interesting phenomena however;

I've found out over the past month that I'm not alone in what's happening:

1) Typing sounds are intermittent and sometimes gone altogether
2) Gesture activated and personal sounds, wavs etc and other's cannot be heard at all
3) Music streams become garbled, go in and out, and only parts of the layered music can be heard
4) DJs on personal radio streams cannot be picked up or are extremely garbled, while the music played sometimes can be heard but ends up like #3

All of the above go in and out - and seem sometimes to depend on direction. By that I mean if you ultra zoom into someone you can hear typing or their uploaded voice/sounds/wavs - and sometimes they come out of only one speaker or the other.

Is this something that can be fixed on our end? I know of at least 10+ other people that are having the same problems.

I too sometimes get garbled land streams it's usualy after I search my library in winamp (winamp has higher priority over SL).

I've been having issues since 1.6.9 with framerates suddenly dropping from my typical 20-30 fps to 3-5 fps and during this time, streaming audio will 'skip' kind of like a CD skipping intermittently.

When I open up the log console (control+shift+4) I see a TON of audio correction errors. (Thank Trent!) I'm trying to get a solid repro but have been unsuccessful so far.

Sudden client side lag I've found usually corresponds heavy activity going on in the log. Be it removing non-existent objects, inventory downloading, or a myriad of other ignorible and fixable mishaps.

Having the same problem since crash
08-04-2005 10:04
I am experiencing the exact same issues since crashing at Frogg Marlowe's live show last week on Thursday. It only happens on my laptop...which is the machine that crashed.

Strife, don't ask me for specifics, I USE computers but I am not a pc geek so I don't really understand them. I do know that I have 256Ram, an ATI Mobility M4 vid card with 32MB memory.
Details on the processor:
MicroprocessorIntel Mobile Pentium III microprocessorSystem chip setIntel 815eL2 cache256 KBExternal bus 100 MHz Front Side BusMicroprocessor data bus width64 bitsDRAM bus width64 bitsAddress bus width32 bitsFlash EPROM4 MbAGP bus133 MHzPCI bus33 MHz

Got this all from Dell. :)
Oh and here is the soundcard detail:
Sound Blaster (software emulation-capable)Audio controllerESS Maestro 3i Stereo conversion16 bit (analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog)Interfaces:
Internal

PCI bus/AC97
External

stereo line-in minijack;
microphone-in minijack;
headphones/speakers (line-out) minijack
Speakerstwo 8-ohm speakers Internal speaker amplifier1.5-W (maximum) channel into two 8-ohms stereo Controlsvolume can be controlled through key combinations and application program menu

All my sound is crackly and crappy. Ideas?

So you want help as long as people don't ask questions? My suggestion then would be to pick up a book on computers to understand the basic terminology so you can get support from people that can help you. Either that or bring it into a repair shop and pay someone to help you.

... i haven't asked for you computer specs yet. My second post was semi-off-topic ramblings about lag. My first was just a confirmation that it happens here...

but since you offered them...
Sounds like your using a Laptop that barely meets specs. Its possible your creating similar situations as when I search winamp by just running SL.

Why snippy?

Whoa Xtropy, why can't anyone take a joke in here...jeez. Thanks for the flame. :p Take a laxative, you seem a little uptight. ;)

Strife, I appreciate your input, always do...I know the pcs are running minimum. Heck, my desktop runs sl with only 128mb of ram!!! but it runs it!

The issue with sound doesn't fit tho, because it was working FINE before the crash...and it is often fine still...I will continue to play on these delapidated pcs until tax time when I can get a new one that is SL friendlier.

I consider myself lucky that I am not having the issues that other users are having. Just thought I would see if anyone could offer some help that went beyond, "you need to upgrade/replace your pc". *sigh*

Hey Lizbeth... Unfortunately your post didn't really come across that you wanted help, only to have someone fix the problem for you. The ability for someone to help is in direct relation to the ability of the person to communicate the problem they are having.

Being a Dell cert tech, I do know that all Dell's have a Service Tag number on the bottom of the laptop. If you go to Dell's website and enter the Service Tag into this URL: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs you can get all updated drivers for your Laptop which may fix the sound issues you are having. If you still have sound problems, there are Beta drivers I can get my hands on if I had your Service Tag number and/or provide links to 3rd party sites with customized drivers to try to fix the problem.

Your post did not appear you wanted to do this type of work and saying "I only use computers" is trying to remove the onus of resposibilty of the problem. If want to fix your car problems, you need to take time to learn about your vehicle to do it. Most people don't want to, or have the desire to do so, and take their cars to a mechanic when they have a problem. Posting on an automobile forum that your car is having problems starting but you just drive them, to not ask questions and don't know how they work would no doubt garner a similar response. Knowledge is power and a small investment in learning computer basics will help you fix the problems you are having, or at the very least, allow the problem to be communicated which will allow you to understand the directions from people that want to you help you, so it can be fixed.

I regret I cannot simplify this further but explaining how to install drivers and hardware is too time consuming to explain on the forums and there are tons of great links in Google or books you can buy to help you better then can I can post. If you'd prefer not to do so, I still think my suggestion to have a technician look at it is the best option you have.

Good luck
