I signed into SL with the debug window turned on (alt-4) and I noticed repeated warnings of Warning Mixing AGP and non-AGP pools, slow! What does this mean and how can I stop it? I have a 3.6 Ghz P4 with a Geforce FX 5700 Go on an HP Pavillion ZD7000 series laptop with the latest drivers. Thanks.

Same Here Cris

I also have an FX 5700 , a 5700LE in my case, and I get the same warnings. My card has 256 MB. In the log file it appears that only 32 Megs of AGP memory is being put into use when the program starts.

I don't have any useful info for you Cris, just saying "me too".

Me, three.

I looked and find that I have the message, too. Does anyone know if it's meaningful, and if it is, what to do to reconfigure to improve the situation?

Hugx,

Don't quote me, but the last explanation I heard was that your video card has exceeded its video memory and is now using system memory, which is slower. It's not a critical error message.

If we just had a comprehensive set of meanings for each possible message in the logs
02-28-2005 10:20
I asked earlier about the possibility of having a list of meanings for the log file messages made available to customers but the answer I got from Phil was more flippant than useful - said he didn't know if anyone knew them all. Well, since we are requested to send the log files in for use in solving problems it would seem kind of logical for the person charged with interpreting the log files to have such a list. Since these messages are generated by a program whose source code is accessible to Linden Lab it would be a simple task to obtain a complete list of messages. These could be posted without explanations (to expedite matters) to the Support Wiki in an appropriate section. Linden Lab employees could add explanations as time allows and customers could add comments as well.

If the log file messages are useful in problem resolution they need to be collected in writing in one place so that all support personnel have access to the information they need to try to solve customer's technical problems in an efficient manner rather than relying on the knowledge and memory of whoever might happen to get a particular support request.

In this particular case the question that comes to mind is that perhaps there is something somehow wrong that is causing the pool mixing when it shouldn't be happening. Just because it is not a critical message doesn't mean it is not slowing down the display and decreasing satisfaction with the product. A person who has bought a video card with a 256 Meg memory might think they would have enough video memory, since they got the largest amount available on normal consumer video cards.

To be honest, I don't believe there's a list of things written to the log files anywhere. I can't imagine the time required to pull that sort of thing from the source code, but I'm not a developer.

I handle many of those log files that come in. We're generally looking for patterns; most notably, lots of notices about out-of-order packets; duplicate connections, requests or resends; or other things that indicate bad network traffic. It's also nice to see what hardware you're using, what Service Packs you have installed, how out-of-date your drivers are, and so on.

Under the current 1.5.x builds, the problems that currently result in the "despite our best efforts, something has gone wrong, send log file" error are overwhelmingly solved by one of the following three steps:

1) Fully remove SL and its cache files and reinstall; see
http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=Deleting+temporary+Second+Life+files+on+Windows

2) Change login location; for example, close SL and click on
secondlife://ahern/120/0/

3) Disable or uninstall firewall or internet security software.

Can we get a more definitive answer on this please? It does seem to be affecting performance. The card has 128mb of memory and this is occuring immediately at sign on.

The log files are produced in order to be read and interpreted by human beings. Not producing a document to enable the support personnel to make proper use of them is pretty darned silly, to put it very nicely.

One would expect - hope, at least hope - that the source code is written in a manner such that one could find every write to the logfile by using something similar to grep which could return a file listing every line in every pertinent file in which an expression such as "WriteToLogFile" or some such similiar phrase occured.

If producing a complete list is for some reason an insurmountable obstacle perhaps a top 40 or top 100 list could be produced.

If what happens with log files is something along the lines of "umm, these look like network messages, I'll ask about wireless networks and firewalls" and no one can really tell if a message like AGP Pool Mixing is a sign of a normal response to an unavoidable condition or a message indicating the presence of a correctable error it would be nice to know.

I apologize for the extent to which I have thrown this thread off course from Cris's post.

Since the general feeling is that you're exceeding video card memory, have you checked the options tag on prferences, and set SL to use the max memory the card has?

if you logout, and back in, in a void sim (someplace with presumably nothing to rendor but yourself) does it happen?

Any additional advice for Mac OS users?

The files listed in the Windows cache-clearing steps are on the Mac in the Finder for your hard drive:
