Hello , i am a new resident and i keep having some connection problem issues.
Most of the time my ping is around 200msec and everything is fine , However there are some days that I KEEP GETTING high pings from sim and myself .

As an example , i can be sitting on a place just chatting with a friend , the area is 100% downloaded and there is nothing that would make sense to give me that huge lag BUT the one moment i am around 200-300 msec and the next one i have 20000 msec .....

That thing its kidna annoying , everything from my side i believe is totally correct , its not my first online gaming experience and i never had issues like that on other games of the kind.

Technical information / what i have configured so far

i)i am running WindowsXP sp2 with windows firewall disabled

ii)my firewall alloying every port from the secondlife.exe tcp / udp

iii)my rooter is configured and reserve mapping every port that second life need on the nat configuration [(tcp 1220-1305)(udp 1120-1305)(tcp 443)]

iv)connected to the net with adsl 512/128

v)Connected to router through netgear 311FA Ethernet card ( i am saying that because i believe its the only thing that could make sense to me IN CASE there is something wrong from my side)

Also a lot of times i get high packet loss without understanding the reason since it would make sense only in case i didn't had enough bandwidth so the packet loss will occur ... but second life can be using the 1/4 of my bandwidth ONLY and still getting packet loss .

I was as much detailed i could be i would like if someone from the Technical department could give me a good explanation about what's going on , i don't see any reason that would make the problem from my side

However i am open to try anything that could help me to solve the situation .

Looking forward for a Reply
(e.g same message given as mail to techinchal department also )

Best Regards , Alex S

Packetloss is a mystery to me too, take comfort in knowing you are not alone, we all suffer from the same symptoms and have done as long as I can remember. Ping times go up as your fps goes down, the client ping timer has nothing to do with the amount of time it takes to ping the server across the net. It's actually how long it was since it last got the time to check a ping reply. AFAIK the client is still to this day, single threaded !!!!! This means when you get into a laggy area your ping times will go up because the client is bogged down rendering 1000s of prims or many avatars. Twist prims are the worst culprits, hair attachments being by far the worst in my experience. Some packetloss is probably a result of buffer overflow during laggy times in the client but not all, some appears to be server end.

Recently it's been very bad due to the load on the SL servers which apparently cannot cope very well with the demand being placed on them.

Rather than fix this and 100s of other annoying and irritating bugs, LL seem hell bent on beating the WoW population count, and we see an all out attempt to get more and more people loading the servers.

The recent down time, could well be an indication of how bad things are getting.

The SL client is basically a hack job, every bug gets cludged and reappears later in a mutated form, programmers appear free to work on any silly little addition that takes the fancy of the moment. No-one is in charge of telling programmers to fix the bugs it seems. Don't expect things to get better very quickly. The problems go very very deep in the software, this is obvious to any professional software designer who's used the SL client for a long time.

I love SL and I'm staying as long as there's nothing better to go to, but LL really need to pay attention to the current state of affairs with the client and concentrate on fixing bugs and NOT new features. Bendy prims, dynamic lights, these are all wonderful, but they will in turn introduce new bugs ...

The only thing you can do, ( apart from ensuring it's not your router etc ) is to reduce your draw distance, turn off Local Lighting, turn off Rippling Water, and all other things to speed up rendering in the client will help reduce your lag.

The Wiki can help, not sure how good this page is but you'll find other pages on it too...
