I just got a new computer (Dell XPS 720) with 4 GB of RAM but even thought it says I have 3 GB available I can't use over 2 GB. Does Vista really require 2 GB of RAM?

Are you using 64bit os on that?, 32bit wont use more then 3~3.7 gig depending on your motherboard/pc setup, cause of memory limits on 32bit.
If you only see 2 of 4 gig ram when you boot / in os, you need to enable memory hole /remapping in bios to see more. 64bit windows is currently limited to 128gig> memory & 16tb of virtual memory ^.~ typical 32bit > ![]() some more info here http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000811.html |

I did the same thing (with a Dell!) for my work SL computer.... apparently it's a well known problem, and there is nothing you can do about it if you're running any form of Windoze

riiight , this is just typical 32 bit fault / bios setting ,nothing to do with os you run just cause its windows , long as it is a 32bit you wont ever go above the 3 gig limit in it. if you only see 2 gig during boot - its bios fault, set wrong and it wont show all the ram above 3 gig - bios need a update - some of your ram is dead <rarly if you see 4 gig on boot, but only 2 in windows - update windows - check bios memory hole - get a 64bit os ~.~ (duh) |

Ok my computer doesn't show anything above over 3 GB but when I boot the computer the operating system already uses almost 1 GB. The Windows Task Manager says I have 3 GB available but when I hit the 2 GB mark the computer boggs down and will not go above it. I understand the OS and I have a 788 MG video card so the last 1 GB is saved for that but why can't I use the RAM from 2 GB to 3 GB? At 2 GB it says I'm using 67% of available RAM.
