When I take high-res snapshots in areas with a lot of traffic, I crash. For a long time, I blamed it on my crappy computer. But I have talked to a lot of other who report the same problem, and some of them have high end machines.

What causes this to happen, and what (if anything) can be done to correct this?

K2, the good news is we do have a recent known issue in our database about hi-res snapshots crashing, and I'll be sure to add what you said.

So let's go through the following:
* You've probably ascertained more of a pattern now. By "a lot of traffic", how many avatars typically are present? And does it coincide with a lot of objects in the area too? For example, if you go to a dense area with plenty of prims.

* If you resize your SL window and make it small and take a hi-res picture in those same high-traffic areas, do you still crash?

* Do you have a secondary hard drive or other storage media you could save to, to test?
And you've also been sending in your crash reports about this, right? (Really important!)

I'm going to move this to Technical Issues. Since you've talked to a lot of others who've had the same prob, I'm hoping at least some will post here with more details. If you've nailed a solid repro, send in a bug report from the HELP menu.

Let's figure out more.

I crash a LOT when taking hi-res screenshots. I'm usually taking them in areas of high numbers of people amd have noticed that the longer I've had SL running the more likely it is to crash.

Freeze crash w/Hi-rez Pic
06-05-2006 13:21
Same issue here.

A number of "updates" ago, Hi-Rez photos were all I took - no problem.

Now, it's impossible. Crowd density has nothing to do with it in my experience. It even happens in a clean sim with one avitar in a blank prim photobooth.

I get a wonderfully long freeze which ends in a glorious crash.

That's the only nice way I can think of putting it.

I get the "wonderfully long freeze" as well, but usually come back to live again without full crash. The freeze can be upwards of 5 mins. Have really only done this in very high av-density locations, but I'm going to try with nobody around later today.

There's also two other things wrong with High-Rez snapshots:

1) When wearing HUD attachments, the HUD attachments will be seen all over the High Rez picture.

2) When turning on 'Light Glows' in the debug menu (Which is a really nice feature btw ;)), the glow effect will be shown weirdly cut or square boxed when in a high-rez snapshot

Just did a quick test.

Hi Res - small window - ok
Hi Res - nearly full screen - crashed

1 after the other.

Going to be difficult to prove a corrolation but crash log has been sent.

One important thing to look at is how much RAM do you have in your machines? High res photos are enormous, by any standards, and the fact that they save as a BMP file, which is an uncompressed image type, means that your poor l'il computer is having to process each and every byte of that data (75 MB, typically, for my high res images). Mine save at 6144 x 4272, which means they contain 26,247,168 pixels, so in 24-bit color they actually take up 78,741,504 bytes of data. Pretty hefty.

One of the things that this means is that if you don't have a large amount of RAM -- and remember, 512 MB, as referenced in so many "why does SL run so slow for me" threads, is not a lot when you're running SL -- not only can it bog your machine down, but it can crash it pretty easily.

Since I upgraded to 1.5 GB, I have rarely had a high res photo related crash.

Just something to think about.

I'm sorry it took me so long to reply to this. I mostly crash when there are a ton of people, though I'm sure if I were in high object areas, I would also crash.

I crash during Town Hall meetings, live music events, weddings. Any time there are more than ten people, and I try to take a high res snapshot, I crash.

I tried resizing my window to 800x600, went to a sim with 39 avatars, took a picture, and -- OMG -- I didn't crash!

I now know the secret to taking high-res pictures in laggy areas. Thank you kindly, wise and wonderful Torley. ;)

Thats excactly what i did to :o was playing Eve and having SL up so it was in a smaller window , then high rez screenshot worked, not really much of a crowd in the sim i took the piccies test tho.

High rez crashes me every time without fail. send the report in and then wait my 5 or 8 or 12 or 20 (rare but it happens to be 20 minutes sometimes) minute time period for SL to finish logging me out.

I have tried with a big window.. with max window... with a small window with a lot of diff screens in between. I have tried saving to a completely EMPTY HD.... nothing seems to work.

I am running a high end machine and graphics system... i work with raw format images all the time that are ... in a word... HUGE. I dont think that this is my system.

It is getting rather tiresome.
