I heard there was a client for sl which did not display the graphics but still allowed someone to teleport about and chat, does anyone know of this client and if so where I could get hold if it. Thanks in advance

Yes its called SLeek. Ive used it and Im told by my friends that it makes you terribly ruthed. But yes you can IM and chat with ppl near you. Its good for when you have to get inworld but dont want to download the full client....like at work
