If I knew then, what I know now, I would have added a supplemental internal hard drive to my computer build to use for the SL cache.

But I didn't, and now I'm wondering if I can compensate by placing the SL cache on a spare external hard drive. My concern is that any advantage from moving the cache will be negated by slower connection speeds to an external, versus internal, device?

My computer is brand new, so I have USB 2.0 (I'm parroting my specs, don't really understand what that means). Both internal and external are Seagate, if that makes any difference.

So, would moving the cache improve performance over my current setup?

Doubt it, not much of a speed diffrence with putting temp on a faster drive at all, seek times help ...well not really ~.^

Raptor disk sata1 (4.6 ms/10.000rpm) vs WD disk sata2 (4.16 ms/7500rpm)
diffrence nothing,Striped/raid does jack for SL to, it doesnt acess your harddrive that much.

Client still waits for server to tell it what to do, so its always dependant on that more, least you dont have to constant download the same place over and over... oh wait ...

Only advantage of having movable cache (FINALLY) is to avoid putting it on windows/os disk (hello defrag) as some dont have that big os disk's.

Tried ramdisk a few times but there isnt much of a advantage using it either (firstlook , 2gig ramdisk (4gig total ram))

Thanks, that was what I needed to know. I'll keep an eye on my hard disk to monitor how often it needs to be defragged. That seems to be the primary advantage to moving cache in my situation.

not needed with First look client tho, you can "set" cache location to any drive/folder
