i'm sick of teh same constant stale response from Live help when i ask that, all i get is "we are having Grid Issues at the moment sir"

I KNOW THIS SUPPORT QUESTION ISNT A RESULT OF GRID~!>_< for god's sake teh second i hit "Precaching " stage of login my pc gets suck for a few secs then completely crashes and when windows comes back i get

"Windows has Recovered from a Serious error"

and teh cause in teh crash analisis is "Second Life"

i'm running Direct X 9.0c latest vers of Quicktime, Windows XP Home SP2 w/ all updates EXCEPT IE7(because i'm hearing IE7 is interfering with other programs)

My Laptop Specifactions
P4 2.66GHZ 384 System Ram 60GB hdd DVD Reader/CD Burner Combo Drive Widescreen format LCD pannel @ 1280X800 Res max

it was working fine when i first installed SL after a system restore now it just crashes my system.. i dunn know what went wrong

I'm sorry that you're having trouble accessing Second Life with your graphics card. The Linden Answers forum is not the best place for tech support, you may want to email or call support directly for guidance.

I've also moved this post over to the Technical Issues forum, for further assistence from the Residents.

Yes, having the latest video drivers is very important. However, in many cases, the drivers from ati.com will not install in laptops. If this is the case, try http://www.omegadrivers.net

Well, the very latest drivers will not install here...
I'm not on a laptop here, but while installing, a message appears "Missing INF" and then stops. Thankfully there's also a previous version availible, but that is not a solution for me either. Everything stays grey.

I am sorry to say but SL no longer runs on that particular card (in general). It use to, then last February or so a update killed that card. Sundi was using her laptop with that card and suddenly was no longer able to use it. We tried everything and nothing worked. Some people have been able to with the omega drivers but depends on the laptop in question. Most won't install or if it does you can get in SL without crashing but you see very little. Prims don't rez, let alone textures. One of the major problems is ATI does not support laptops and the manufactures are extreamly slow at updating cards (if they ever do).

Sorry this is not what you wanted to hear, but if you can't get a set of updated drivers from your laptop manufacturer and the omega drivers don't work. You will have to use a different system to get on SL as i very much doubt that SL will be changed so that these board work again (it hasn't yet).

Okay, that was clear. Thanks! :)

I yanked this ATI card out of it's socket and replaced it with a Nvidia FX5500 256 Mb card. And yes, it works perfectly now.

thanks everyone , sorry i haven't even made a reply , thanks to the Linden who moved this, i didnt bother checking it because it wasn't getting ANY replies,

i haven't been able to try it lately or at all nor can i now,

it's being repaired for a faulty soddering point on one of my power connector's pin, (if i tap the powercord it acts like it's not on ac power)

i do get it back in the morning i've been told even inworld to try the omega drivers, and to turn off hardware acceleration..

NOW to say this,

when i first installed sl before i did a Update on windows xp, it was working fine, i'd only system crash at TheEdge,

now it atm crashes the system when it starts to laod the world, / Precache

biut i couldnt get even it to load using the standard drivers that came off my Driver Restore CD then using the set that is in the latest "SoftPaq" driver for my Laptop

when i get it back i will try the omegadriver, and turn off hardware acceleration and se eif that work,

i've been told theres a way to get it working but ya haveto hack/patch SL in Linux mode/client and even then it's only @ 3FPS (name of person has asked me noit to mention incase that work around is a Bannable offense, Lindens if it is i will warn him asap.)

and i know the laptop will never run sl verry well than if it had a nvidia or pny chipset, ATI's focus more on consumer Graphics (DirectX/TnL) more then low stuff as in Open GL (SL) a prime example of TnL Games are 2 famous ones "Final Fantasy XI and WoW" even then it dosent perform well..

be4 i end this and goto bed , Goodnightall and to all the furr users of SL , may you dream of your true furr selfs

Just a quick note, Nvidia was the first big 3D graphics company to include TnL. This was back in the GeForce 2. Since then, TnL is a basic part of every 3D card made. DirectX and OpenGL are both APIs used for 3D rendering. Nvidia handles both really well, where as ATI may just squeek out better performance with DirectX, but their OpenGL implementeation leaves a LOT to be desired (And is *missing entirely* in their Vista drivers.)

havent tried reducing the hard are acceleration to any degree yet on official drivers will edit this after i try the official drivers from the SoftPaq update form compaq

(it was causing a HUGE DEGRADE in FFXI, 30 mins to get FFXI to start in "Playonline Viewer" and CutSceens looked like SH*T~!)

~~~~ EDIT ~~~~
