Login screen blurry/fuzzy/can't read text

I've installed SL 1.6.1.2 and have video problems. I've scoured through the forums and not found any solution.

When I load SL, the login screen is blurry and almost impossible to read. Logging in produces awful textures and colors which flash in quick succession, creating an illusion of movement almost. I have attached two screen captures to demonstate the problem.

I've tried running SL in a window, full screen, and at different resolutions but I can't find a combination to produce clean output. Troubleshooting within SL is very difficult because I can barely read the screen text.

Any ideas for getting the video to display properly?

Systems specs:
Athlon XP 2100+
nVidia GeForce 4200 Ti
512 MB RAM
Shuttle (VIA) mobo
XP Pro SP2
DirectX 9.0c
Latest VIA and nVidia drivers (as of 9/27/05)

Thanks.

Whew. That looks like memory corruption or addressing errors. Try turning off AGP under preferences and see if that improves things.
