Im not sure with the little information you have given but here's a link for upgrading Intel Extreme Graphics Drivers

Ok, unless I'm sorely mistaken and your computer was extremely cheap, you got screwed.

Intel graphics? My god, that's a third rate little nobody graphics processor that can't run MOST games, let alone SL very well. I'd go return the computer and get a real one. Or at least force them to give you a real graphics card. Something from NVIDIA.

Please go to the following link:
https://secondlife.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/secondlife.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=SrBwxDlh&p_lva=&p_faqid=79&p_created=1051293061&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9OTkmcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li=cF91c2VyaWQ9S2FrdV9MaXBwbWFubiZwX3Bhc3N3ZD1pYW1zZWN1cmUmcF9lbWFpbD1reWxlYWdnZW5AaG90bWFpbC5jb20mcF9maXJzdF9uYW1lPUtha3UmcF9sYXN0X25hbWU9TGlwcG1hbm4*

Then read and note this section of text in that article:
Graphics cards not supported by Second Life include: Nvidia GeForce(original),TNT2,TNT and older nVidia; ATI Radeon (original), Rage 128 or older; 3DFX Voodoo, Voodoo 2, Voodoo 3, or other 3DFX; S3 Savage or Twister; and Intel Graphics.

I might suggest you look towards purchasing a GeforceFX 5700 or higher. First thing, though, make sure you have an AGP slot in your system :)

My notebook computer has an Intel Extreme Graphics card, and runs SL mostly without problems (occasional crashes -- comparable to ATI). I'd suggest downloading the latest drivers from the Intel site. If that doesn't work, if possible, replace the graphics card with an nVidia card.

Actually, most of those cards will work, they're just not supported. I agree with your assessment, however -- a GeForce 5700 is what I'd recommend as well.

Intel does work, very slow, but works.

Just have to add that Intel is not even close to being comparable to ATI (unless like a 7000 series card, but even then). Intel is a base, just good enough card, it is not a game card.

Missing the Point

The PCI Express is the newest thing, faster and better than AGP 4x8x, BUT there aren't many PCI Express cards available yet, tho both nVidia and ATI are making them...but they're rare as hen's teeth, right now, and very expensive. Eventually, these cards will wipe out the old AGP standards, but those of us with the new tech (PCI Express slot instead of AGP slot) are having probs. It's not that we have a cheap thing, it's that we're on the bloody bleeding edge. :p

The ghost of Amiga past ...

All games are moving to the GPU model of programmable vertex and pixel shaders, and since that's currently a 2-horse race between nVidia and ATI, everyone else is being left behind in the dust. Intel isn't the only company that's felt the effect of that.

It's a necessary step in the evolution of graphics processing though, at least until having multiple CPUs in your PC becomes ubiquitous, which won't be tomorrow.

Offloading low-level graphics work from the main processor is a good idea anyway. You can almost see the faint ghostly outline of the old Amiga's "intelligent" graphics chips shimmering around nVidia and ATI chip cases ... a good idea never dies, it just gets reinvented. :)

Like I said :)

PCI X (PCI Express) is the *new* thing, not old tech. I've read that 8x AGP has gone as far as it can, but PCI X is supposed to be at least twice as fast. That built-in Intel graphics thingie is just a stop-gap, to get you going, until you get a chance to get a real graphics card. That's the way most built-in graphics in comps are. Anyway...

I just got an nVideo GeForce 6600, made specifically for the PCI X slot in my new computer, from Circuit City, they had just gotten them in. $199, 256 megs of RAM and that new fast PCI X setup. I installed it, got my new drivers installed and...what was the result?

:)

I have *never* had such good looking, smooth graphics in SL. The game flows incredibly fast. There are details in the 3d I've never seen before. It's like a whole new game. Gina, you don't have an inferior, cheap machine, I don't think. You just have some of the newest tech available. If you get a PCI X card (nVidia seems to work really well with SL) I bet that you, like me, will fall in love with SL all over again.
