I am not new to SL but my computer is too slow and lagging. I want to get a new laptop and need advice on how much RAM, how much of everything I should get for the best experience without all this lag and the fact that if I try to dance and do anything else I crash or stall or ..well you know. I am prepared to buy, but what? Thanks so much!

as much ram as you can get in there 1 gb min a upper end NVIDIA or ATI video card
after that
the fastest cpu that your budgets allows anything else you might want (ie a bigger screen hd ect)
if you gave us a price range someone will be able to hook you up

gig min , 2 gig ram preferable , core2duo cpu & Nvidia vid card, either of these; Nvidia Go7600 8400 GT 8600M GT 8700 GT Ati drivers are something i hate on laptops bigtime,
New laptop would prob be with vista, Ati & Vista dont go to well with eachother yet, nvidia doesnt have that issue (opengl), why i suggest a nvidia if you plan on upgrading, or use win xp for easier with ati. -.o 8xxx cards not for being able to run dx10 on laptop, just they are bit faster then 7 gen.

This is what I found!

I went to Dell and for about $1800 (which is $800 more than I wanted to spend) I can get Intel 2 Duo T7300 processor, 2.0 GHZ/800mhz FSB/4 mb cache Vista (but I think if I call I can get XP, they made an announcement that they are bringing it back because people are screaming for it) 17" non-glare sceen 256mb NVIDA @GEforce 8600 GT video card 2 GB DDR2@ 667 mz memory
So does that seem like a good deal? How much of a hard drive do I need? I am only using it for the web, email and SL. I have had 6 computers, constantly upgrading but if I am spending this much I'd like to get some time, like at least 3 years out of it, am I kidding myself, will it, and me, be obsolete in 3 years? Thanks again!

go to www.tigerdirect.comThey are masters at putting together the best gaming machines for cost & performance. Also some reliable technical help. The same machine you just mentioned for $1800, prices out with better components for 1/2 that ammount. Give a look. Avoid Best Buy and all the local retailers.. Anything they sell is mostly geared to the home user with a few greasy geeks behind the walls who know tid bits about building a good box. no offence to you "geek squad" employees at best buy hehe I was one once too

An nVidia 8xxx is certainly nice, but in a laptop you also have to worry about heat. My HPdv9000 is a lot like the Dell you price out, and it has a nVidia Go7600. I get very good SL performance.
For a SL machine that will also be a good general purpose machine
Nvidia 7xxx or ATI 16xx 2GB main memory (1gb will do, but 2 will let you run lots of other stuff simultaneously).
Then, save as much $$ as you can on everything else.

Getting closer
08-26-2007 08:57
I have looked at Tigerdirect.com, and they seem to have many refurbished laptops..is that a good idea? So If I gave you $1200 and said..get me the best and lightest lap top, with the best memory, video card, wireless and with XP, what would you buy me?
Even though I have computers, know how to do things on them, I really have no clue what is best. Since joining SL last year I see that I need better than I have, but while my desktop is OK, I am travelling this winter and want to connect without being as frustrated as I am here...by the way guys, I am old enough to be your Grandma, so I am behind on technology..so I appreciate any help..thanks!

over at hp they have a dv2500, which if you max out is a dc 2ghz 2gb ram 160gb hard disk and a geforce 8400 for 12,380$
its the "super mobile" eventho its got a 14.5 inch screen its the lighest laptop they make and meets decent SL performance ... altho im not a huge fan of that 8400 video card
as far as refurb models... ive bought them before, and im a fan of tiger directs support and service, long as it has a decent warranty i say why not
but you dont want one of these 7 day DOA return policys, that usually ends up in trouble
