Hi - I've read a couple of notes here about people suing a 3G USB connection to get into SL while on the move on a laptop.
I travel around the UK a lot, and some hotels charge £10-£15 a day for wifi access...so I want to investigate getting a 3G card which can plug into my USB. Some mobile providers do deals for 3Gb/mnth for £15.
Please can anyone shed any light on
1- approx data useage of SL... I've heard 100mb/hour - is that right?? (could get expensive)
2- what causes heaviest use... ? Presume just logging in one place and chat not too heavy on data downloading... and building things is heaviest??
2- which mobile network is best - I've always get best signal from Vodafone, but THREE and Tiscali have good offers.
cheers
UPDATE
So far I have found that in the Uk you can get a (Apple Mac compatible) USB mobile 3G card for free from Vodafone , with 3Gb a month downloads for £15. I just tried one on a work laptop, and the connection speed was stunning - as fast as out LAN ethernet!
Tiscali also do one - but not Mac compatible, so no use to me
THREE charge the same at £15 a month for 3GB but you pat £30 for the USB dongle. And Three's signals /coverage is not as good as Vodfone.
DATA USEAGE ... hard to tell, but I've heard some people say SL uses average 100Mb/hour, which allows 30 hours connection at 3Gb limit a month. OK for trips away from home.
I just used Vodafone 3G connection, continuously loading Youtube videos which used 13mb in 6 mins... that's 130Mb a minute - and must be way over what SL uses.
