I have a emac g4 with 1mb ram. I want a new graphics card to make sl run better, otherwise my mac runs fast. Any suggestions?

I hate to say it, but the problem with any all-in-one models is that they aren't easily upgradeable, if at all. I know I used to be able to buy Voodoo cards for an iMac, but I don't know if anyone does anything like that now. Best bet may be to live with it or upgrade, possibly to something like the Mac mini, if you want to keep the price low. (That being said, test all your apps on a new system before buying to make sure they run acceptably.)

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Maybe someone else can.

Do NOT buy a Mac Mini for SL! You won't be happy with it. The Mac Mini only has 32 MB VRAM, and the video card is NOT upgradable.

I use a Mac Mini now, and the frame rate sucks. I get only 2-3 fps normally, and maybe 5 fps if I am staring into a void sim. There are many places in SL that I can not even go to, because my frame rate drops to zero, or I crash from texture overload.

The only reason I use a Mac Mini to access SL is because I have nothing better available, and I can't afford to go buy a new computer just to do better in SL. But I can not recommend it for anyone changing systems. You'd be better off buying a bargan brand Wintel PC and slapping in a killer video card.

Unfortunately, I think your eMac is in the same boat. I am not terribly familiar with that model, but I don't think the video card is upgradable on it, either. Look on Apple's website, and see if they offer a way to order a similar eMac with alternate video cards. If they do noy, yours can't be upgraded.

yeah... unless you got one of the new emacs (i did:) refurb; 64m vram:), you probably only have 32m.:( and that would make sl pretty unhappy... 64 feels like bare-minimum to get by on. (oh, and 1gig ram is pretty much essential!:)

Just curious, Ceera, since Apple stupidly retained the name Mac mini for both PowerPC and Intel-based computers, which processor do you have? If the Intel, is it single or dual core? I definitely don't want to be giving out bad recommendations. Thanks.

the eMac just doesn't cut it - try the new Intel Mac range

I traded in my old eMac for an Intel iMac and had the vram upped to 256m, and 1gig ram with room for one more inside. My fps is fantastic now, averaging around 10-15 fps used to be 5fps on the eMac). Even managed to get video at the BBC event last weekend.

There is another thread going on in the Mac Forum about the new laptops you may want to check out.

Isn't this point the video card? And what is worse on Intel-based one, I'm afraid that Intel graphic card is incompatible.
