I know that SL doesn't support the Win98 OS's,
but if anyone knows any tricks for how to get SL
to run on Win98 then i'd greatly apperciate it.

currently it opens and promptly closes w/o ever displaying a window or error message.

I am told that the program depends up system calls that Win98 simply does not have.

If I`m wrong, that`d be great!

Torley, what`s your take on this?

Alas, Second Life's system requirements are the following:

PC Minimum System Requirements:
  1. Internet Connection*: Cable or DSL
  2. Operating System: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
    1. OR Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4)

  3. Computer Processor: 800MHz Pentium III or Athlon, or better
  4. Computer Memory: 256MB or better
  5. Video/Graphics Card**:
    1. nVidia GeForce 2, GeForce 4mx, or better
    2. OR ATI Radeon 8500, 9250, or better

It won't run on Windows 98.

Yet surprisingly enough I can get it to work on a 433mhz p3 with 192mb ram and a Geforce4 mx440 PCI at my friend's house.

I'm curious. Does it run fast enough to be playable? Are you using Windows 98? If not, are you using a Linux distro? If not Linux, how does one install Windows XP on a sub 700mhz system?

I've worked on PC's that were below that Speed w/ 128 MB RAM & a GeForce 2 MMX video card where the user had XP Home installed.

How does it run?

Put it this way- Slow doesnt begin to cover it. How many minutes can you wait for your computer to start? Notice- I said "minutes"?

its quasi playable with LOD cranked down to almost nothing, fog disabled, no particles, draw distance to 64, Disable Far Clip disabled (Drop Draw distance if FPS<10), and low ground detail. Enough to get around and talk to people, not much else. Forget vehicles and shiny stuff altogether. I don't remember how he did it, all I know is he used WinXP Pro.
