OS X alerted me to the utter lack of storage space on my startup volume. I had 11 MB spare.
After comfirming the disappearance of over a dozen gigabytes, I had a sneaking suspicion of the culprit. Get Info on my cache folder in Library > Application Support > Second Life revealed the directory to contain a whopping 18.1 GB of data. I only gave SL permission to consume 1 GB.
So, do I have to police this thing myself?

Hmm, thought this bug was nipped at some point.
The cache seems to pile up when (re)installs happen. Which would happen just about any time you update the application.
Grr.
Please bug report this in-game, so it goes to the QA people directly.

This is why I'm pretty much stuck running SL on Linux. My Windows install places the "application settings" folder where the cache goes on the 1.5GB system partition, and SL fills that up on a regular basis, no matter what I've got the cache set to. At least under Linux, I can remap the cache to wherever I want.

Carnildo... I don't quite think your problem is related to Enabran's problem.
AFAIK, the OSX installer used to never remove old cache files. So when you went to log in after a reinstall/update, it'd start a new file. And if you're set to 1000mb, that fills up fast.
However I haven't experienced this on my Mac as of late (just checked App Support) and I don't clear my cache every week (or at all) like Merwan does. But I also don't use the Mac as my primary SL machine.
I'd still say bug report it, it's an anomaly that was reportedly fixed for the Mac version.
As for your problem on Windows, Carnildo, I believe that Strife Onizuka has posted about NT junctions, which are similar to Unix symlinks but for Windows, and you can use that to redirect either your SL cache directory, or your entire Docs and Settings directory.

Mac OS Cache

Routinely trashing Cache, Temporary Items, Logs and even Application Support folders / files will vastly improve SL performance. The files rebuild at next SL launch It is like a clean install.
An indication of Cache size is how long it takes for SL to launch. The longer it takes SL to start, the larger the Cache is.

To check or clear your cache:
Open
[your user's home folder]/Library/Application Support/Second Life/
The folder named "cache" is what you're looking for. Get Info to learn its size. If it's bigger than 1 GB, throw it out.

NT junctions/reparse points don't work with FAT32, and NTFS works with neither Win98SE nor Linux.

From: Carnildo Greenacre True. With me, the cache grows after each time SL crashes. Ohh. That would explain it. SL crashes with significant frequency, thus exacerbating my cache size problem. Cool, I'll just have to watch it closely, then.
