I am running on a very old P4 with a very old NVidea GForceFX 5950 Ulta video board and 1 GB RAM. Machine is over 3 years old and is only now starting to slow down running SL. But I am thinking it may soon be time to retire it.

I found this system that loos pretty interesting to me http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529665346.php

2 things concern me
1. ATI and SL used to play very badly together (mind you I havent tried running ATI since I first joined the Game 3.5 years ago)

2. Vista is a bit scary. I generally avoid new OS until it is in at least release 4.

what do you all think?

ATI and SL play along sorta kinda, it seems the major issues atm are with ATI + VISTA + SL

Is it doable though because this system is both?

New Machine

If this is any help... I'm using an ATI X1300/X1500 series video card and Vista Home edition on a Dell Duo 5000+ and (knock on lots of wood) havn't had any problems since I upgraded drivers at Dells website right after this system was delivered back about 6 months ago. Hope that helps.

well the issue is out of my hands now...motherboard blew :P I am here on a family members Mac.

So now comes the frantic hunt for a machine and the nightmare of vista. Has anyone tried putting thier old XP hard drive in a Vista machine and setting up a dual boot system? If so some basic instruction would be very helpful.

Looks like the one you list in the OP can be setup with XP - they charge US$150 for it, though..

I am running fine with Vista Ultimate and an ATI Sapphire 1650Pro (Dual Displays).

Can't you still request XP from Dell? I dunno about gateway, but I would just avoid vista for now. I don't suppose you have a copy of XP laying around? when it comes, just reformat it and stick your old XP on it. That way when you do want to move to vista, you already have a license.

A very good friend of mine recently got a new machine with Vista Home Premium. I told her about the problems with SL and Vista..........she still went with the new machine. Hahahahaha........I'm eating crow now. :) Not one problem with her set up...........though she is using an nVidia 8600GT graphics card which I recommended.

I couldn't believe her so I went to her house in RL...........she wasn't lying. I wish my XP machine ran SL that well. :)

Take that for what it is............every set up is different.

Go ahead and try Vista, LLABS seems to headed to the right direction with it. Less problems then earlier.
