Massive lag and PL during downloads...

If I log into SL with an empty cache or I move around and have to download new data, I get hit with lag in the 7000 ms range and packet loss up to 20%. It stops after the new data is downloaded and my bandwidth usage drops back down. In effect, everything is just fine as long as I don't move around. My frame rate is great.

Some other people I talked to in my sim had something similar but I haven't heard anything from them lately and I haven't seen any posts about it. I've been trying to determine if its my connection but it doesn't seem to be. I can download at about 180 kilobytes/sec (1.5 Mbps DSL) and I'm not lagging on any IRC server. I'm hoping 1.6 fixes it or at least someone else is having the problem and knows what is going on.

Anyone else?

you might try lowering the max throughput of SL in the preferences, and see what happens (if you drop it way down, everything will stay gray a long while, but you'll be able to move).

What happens if you try to ftp or use an instant messanger to transfer large files?

Are you being proxied anyplace?
- does your windows box have an ip starting with 192.168, or 10. or 172.16.

- does http://checkip.dyndns.org/ give the same IP address as your windows box?

I'm using ICS with Windows 2000 Advanced Server hosting the DSL modem and the computers running SL are XP Pro and 2000 Pro, This configuration hasn't changed in 6 months except for the addition of the XP box. I don't run 2 instances of Second Life at a time.

The bandwidth limiter is useless. I locked it down to 200 and the debug readout (Alt-1) will peg and hold over 1000 for 30 seconds at times. I'll experiment with it today.

This did start like the day after I installed the 1.6 preview. I will try uninstalling it though I don't see any connection. I thought maybe there was some kind of backend upgrades going on secretly that might have caused this, but then it should be for more than just me.

If nothing works I'll go next door and install SL on my neighbor's system and see if it happens there too...

I'd also highly suggest trying things on a setup that does NOT involve ICS whatsoever.
