New Dell computer with Vista & ATI x2400 crashes after log in

I know this has been asked but I've yet to see a definitive answer. I just set up my brand spanking new Dell - it came with Vista and an upgraded video card (ATI x2400). I can log in to SL and everything looks beautiful - for about 30 seconds. Then it goes to a light blue screen and I have to restart. Sometimes it will bring up the crash logger but not always.

I went to the ATI website and downloaded/installed the lastest Catalyst 8.8 version but still no difference - same thing happens. I still have my old pc with XP on it and an antiquated graphics card - I can hook it up to the internet to get into SL but it has only 1/2 gig of RAM so it's SLOOOW (but it works!).

The main reason for getting a new computer was speed but if I can't get into SL for more than 30 seconds it is useless (for that purpose). Any ideas/tips anyone?

All my machines have ati cards all different 4870 2900 1950 1900 and they all crash with 8.8 logs in starts to render 30 seconds later poof crash all do the same thing

installed 8.7 again all fine

loks like we have to wait for a fix again

That did the trick - I removed 8.8 and replaced it with 8.7 and so far, so good. Thanks!

I just want to let you know.

I've been experianced strange behaviour like Textures mismatch, very slow rendering during Texture load and total SL Viewer crash, right after login with a ATI 4850 card, using the latest ATI Driver v8.8.

Please login to JIRA, and VOTE for this issue, so it will become more & more importand to be fixed ASAP. This is the only way to get rid of this delayed attention of Linden Lab, to support ATI Cards PROPERLY in the SL Viewer!

This urgently need to be debugged and fixed by the LL developer team.
Hey Guys, since the ATI 4850 Card is so rockin' cheap while it bring's a tremendous boost to your PC, it'll be spread on the market rapidly during the next month. So this has to be paid attention...

If you VOTE for it, also WATCH this issue on JIRA, so LL will notice there's a lot Users out there, using a ATI Card and struggling with the SL Viewer (wich is btw the ONLY application/game nowadays, that has such problems with a ATI Card).

Thanks for your attention & voting for this, to help a lot of SL Residents, playing SL with a ATI Card, BETTER.

Does anyone have a link to the 8.7 catalyst that I could go to to download and see if that resolves my issue? I'm on the 4870 and can stay logged in for a max of 8 seconds so far.

same issues here (i posted on another thread). I have a brand new system, 4850 card... 8.8 driver. no sl.

I too can't figure out where to find the 8.7 driver to try that.

Go to ATI's website. There will be a driver search somewhere on the page........it may be buried in the "download" section but there will be a driver search somewhere. I have nVidia but I'm sure ATI's site is similar. Once you find the driver search just type in the required information.....usually your card model, your operating system, and, for ATI, I suppose it will ask if you are looking for Omega or Catalyst drivers. That should take you to your driver download page.......choose the one you want and download. If the list presented to you does not contain any older drivers then you will need to find the archived section. Do the same as for the regular search and look for the version number you are interested in.

It's pretty straight forward and simple.

This will give you all of the Catalyst options for the last two years.

Fair warning though, getting 8.7 is -not- always a fix. I did a complete uninstall of all ATI drivers and then did an install of 8.7 and had to spend the next 6 hours in safe mode trying to get my computer working right again. Please be careful when messing with these.

Be careful with any driver installation. Drivers are programs, but very important programs (especially video drivers) and if done incorrectly or your downloaded file is corrupted or missing something you have huge problems ahead of you.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaand I finally got it working ! ! ! ! ! ! !

8 hours later I finally got it down to -just- the 8.7 drivers and got it all installed and set up. Now SL is running with pretty much no lag in high lag sims with the whole thing maxed out on graphics!!!! I totally recommend the ATI 4870 but just make certain you're using the 8.7 cataylst and not the 8.8 which is having a mad warzone with SL right now.

I don't know if it had to do with the guru3d site or not, but the download I got from ati's website went a -lot- faster (like half the time) and what I downloaded actually worked. Thanks everyone for replying so quickly and trying to help me out!

For anybody with driver issues and having tried several sites offering driver solutions, I personally recommend driveragent.com.

It's also worth saying that it's probably better not to update a driver if you aren't having problems with it, since the new driver might give you a conflict/compatibility issue you didn't have before!

I downloaded the 8.7 driver, driver only, and got an error message when I tried to log into sl saying my drivers weren't updated and only option was to click ok. it then went straight to crash logger.
