Hi,

I"m thinking of switching from cable to DSL since right now DSL is so much more economical and cable costing me almost 50 bucks/month just for internet! Was wondering if anyone is running SL via DSL and if it works well or not for you.

Thanks

Dsl is alot better for games usually, really depends on the speed you are after.

Should be no diffrence using cable vs dsl in SL tho, since SL doesnt really rely much on ms (like fps's do)

where i live it is
cable 4 down 1 up
dsl is 2 down 1 up
(not counting sdsl, xdsl's)

Unless you are after the duplex ones, that has same upload/download speeds, watch the upload tho, some sneaks sell high down and very crappy upload.

You know what speed youre after?, and have on cable right now?.

Watch out for people selling lines with stupid contention ratios too! :)

oh yes, i didnt think of that, theres BANDwidth LIMITS, watch out for those, dont have them where i live ^^;

A day in SL can easy take 1000mb+ if you travel around, some have limits like 6 gig a month (excuse me while i snicker :P)

And just for completeness (and because I was so amazed when I found out), there's some ISPs that have deals where they rock nasty stuff at their end to stop you using a router.

6 gig?!?! luxury!?!?! Here in South Africe the standard cap is only 3 gigs! I had to buy a secondary account with an adittional 10 to play SL.
And we have port-shaping - I can get about 512kb/s on HTTP, but only about 200kb/s on other traffic (like SL) - you must see my packet-drop bar to believe it :(

I use SL quite a lot, spend horus a day and it uses between 12gb and 15gb a month. Luckily my cap barely covers that amount but still.. 500mb a day.. that's like downloading a whole game everyday. This is the one thing that prevents many people from playing the game in the longterm and really needs to be looked at. May be bigger and better caching needs to be implemented because I would much rather store 15gb of cache than have to download the same stuff over and over and over every day.

Geesh, I didn't realize that DSL has these issues of bandwidth limits and different speeds. Never had DSL before. Thanks so much for your input everyone. I'll be sure to ask these questions before I decide. I also am on SL several hours daily and wouldn't want problems with that.

Thanks for the link Thilli, here's the results: (with cable)

Download Speed: 6179 kbps (772.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 353 kbps (44.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Thanks again :)
