I'm not a techie, and I will try to explain this so that other non-techies can understand.
I, too, was having issues this morning that I could not log in. Even after uninstalling and re-installing SL. I would get to the "connecting to region" screen and just hang.
I had before had a prob, and had directed my LinkSys router to allow online gaming on certain port range and had worked fine until 1.7. I was watching my Peer Guardian and noticed that SL was trying to access my computer for the game through a port that was lower than the range I had set for it.
I immediately went into my router configure page, and issued a new range of numbers that would include the port numbers SL was trying to communicate with my 'puter for the game. These fall in the range between 12000 and 12050.
Saved the new settings and tried to log into SL... WALLAAH!!! I am in. Not only that, but things loaded up way faster than they had been; and this is on a completely fresh install with no cache to preload.
I hope perhaps this may help someone else out there, and maybe even help the SL techs find what is happening with the log-in issues. If there was a change in the particular ports that the game would look for, then we should have been notified with the change, so those with firewalls and on LAN/Networks could be sure that it was still configured properly.

From the wiki located here https://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=Configuring+your+firewall+for+Second+Life+accessThese ports and protocols apply to routers as well as firewall proggies. Firewall Configuration Problem How do I set up my firewall for Second Life access? Potential Solutions If your firewall requires specific port information (a hardware router for example), you can use the following settings: UDP and TCP Ports: 12020 to 13050 OR Ports: 12020 to 12050 AND 13000 to 13050 (all ranges are inclusive) If your software firewall allows specific programs to be excluded or "trusted" programs, add "secondlife.exe" from the Second Life program folder as a trusted program. For further support with your firewall, consult the support website for your firewall, router, or firewall software.

Thanks Lecktor =) Unfortunately this has not worked for me, but I have not been able to get past the "Logging in. Second Life may appear frozen. Please wait." screen since the patch.
