In both Windows and Mac OS X, I've found that if I resize the window so that it takes up more than half the screen on a laptop's screen when using an external monitor and having the external monitor set as the primary monitor the game will crash. Is this a known issue?

I haven't heard of this issue before, but that's a very specific set of circumstances. Is your laptop screen very large and have some insane resolution?
