I havent been on second life for a while, but now whenever i try to play i get on for about 30 secongs before a bubble pops up saying network cable disconnected. Ive been trying to get on for about a week now with the same thing happening over and over. After the the connection drops out i have to restart my comp before it works again. I have Comcast cable internet, 1.5 gigs of ram, windows XP, and a radeon x600. Please help, im dying over this.

It's not that nobody cares, Strectmar, it's just that noboday really knows how to help you.

The problem very likely caused by something in your own set up. Go through and reseat every connector between the wall and your computer. If this doesn't work, open up your computer and reseat the network card. If this doesn't work, replacing the cables. If this doesn't work, try to borrow a working modem and a working router (if you use one) and see if replacing either of those items help. I don't know what to do if this doesn't help -- maybe contact your cable company and see what they say.

Try This . . .

Ok, Here's your diagnostic tree:

1. Are you able to connect to a site such as Google.com, and stay connected? if so, go to section 6.

2. Find another computer and connect it to your network cable, and try to go into SL. What you want to see is if that computer has the same problem.

3. If it does, replace the network cable, and see if that helps. If not, replace the coaxial cable between the modem and the wall socket, then test again.

4. If still problematic, remove any routers or network hubs in between the cable modem and the computer, and connect the computer directly to the modem. Check again.

5. If that does not solve the problem, call your ISP/Cable local office, and have them come and check out the connection and the modem.

5. If the test computer works, it implies your computer has a problem.

6. Get the latest drivers for your network interface, and load them. Then try again.

7. If no luck, then get the chipset drivers, and load them; any luck?

8. Finally, uninstall SL, then go into your registry with Regedit, and find and remove all occurrences of secondlife.

9. Reboot, then download the SL client, and try again.

If that does not do it, I am fresh out of ideas . . .

Umm, does the disconnection/connection problem occurs only with SL? Or it drops even surfing the net?
If its only with SL there might be some bandwidthlimit since SL uses a pretty load of band. What's the speed of your net? It really sounds like LAG and huge packet loss.

It only happens with SL, but i play a number of other mmos and i torrent on occasion too, so i dont think its the bandwidth.

No.

Every time LL issues a patch, the packet loss goes through the roof for most SL users, and only on SL, not anything else... we get disconnects, router locks, and a whole bucketload of packet related problems with the SL client.

It will clear up in about 5-6 days on its own, when people finish downloading the update... then SL will run well for a day or 2 and then LL will issue another patch and SL will be unusable for another 5 or 6 days. :(

Dont make these poor suckers mess with their drivers and computers, because there isnt anything wrong with their computers.

You just have to wait out the packet loss on the shitty LL network connection and HOPE that one day they will figure out to put the patch servers on a seperate network connection
